Spent today with 30 seniors from the Glenview Senior Center! We toured four communities so that they could be educated on what is available to them in terms of senior living in the area. They were fun to be with! Thank you, Gina Giancola-Knight for planning with me! It’s always nice to work with a friend! The communities were Covenant Northbrook, Sedgebrook Lincolnshire, North Shore Place in Northbrook, and Arbor Terrace in Highland Park. Debra Feldman and Julianne Slade also joined us as sponsors today! A great day!

Chicago Health Magazine asked readers on social media the question

"What is one disease or medical issue for which you would most like to see a cure?"

Senior Living Experts Kerry Quirin 's shared:

Alzheimer’s disease. My mom had it. She was in the Rush program and donated her brain to their program. What, if anything, did they learn from mom’s brain? Alzheimer’s and other dementias cause family to say goodbye to their loved one twice. The only good thing in all of it was that our mom remained her happy self. That made it easier on us kids. —Kerry Quirin, senior living advisor, Senior Living Experts

Questions about ?
Private duty home care refers to personalized, non-medical assistance provided to individuals in their own homes. Unlike traditional home health care, which is typically prescribed by a physician and delivered by licensed healthcare professionals, private duty home care services are often arranged directly by individuals or their families and can vary widely based on the individual's needs and preferences.
Companion care: Providing companionship, emotional support, and social interaction to individuals who may be isolated or lonely.
Personal care: Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility assistance.
Homemaking services: Performing household tasks such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, grocery shopping, and running errands.
Medication reminders: Prompting individuals to take their medications according to prescribed schedules, although private duty caregivers typically do not administer medications.
Transportation: Assisting with transportation to medical appointments, social outings, or other activities.
Respite care: Providing temporary relief to primary caregivers by taking over caregiving responsibilities for a specified period of time.
Specialized care: Offering specialized services tailored to the individual's specific needs, such as dementia care, Alzheimer's care, or post-surgery recovery support.
Private duty home care services are typically provided by trained caregivers, home health aides, or certified nursing assistants (CNAs) who have undergone background checks and received relevant training. These caregivers may work independently, through home care agencies, or as part of a larger healthcare organization.
Private duty home care can be a valuable option for individuals who wish to remain in their own homes but require assistance with daily tasks and activities. It allows individuals to receive personalized care in a familiar environment, promoting independence, comfort, and quality of life.

Are you a caregiver for a senior loved one?
Take breaks: Schedule regular breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge. Even short breaks can help alleviate stress and prevent burnout. Use this time to engage in activities that you enjoy, such as reading, listening to music, or going for a walk.
Set boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between your caregiving responsibilities and personal life. Learn to say no to additional demands on your time and energy, and communicate your needs to family members, friends, or other caregivers who can provide support.
Seek support: Don't hesitate to reach out for help when you need it. Seek support from friends, family members, support groups, or counseling services. Sharing your experiences and feelings with others who understand can provide emotional validation and relief.
Prioritize self-care activities: Make time for self-care activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul. This could include exercise, meditation, yoga, hobbies, journaling, or spending time in nature. Find activities that help you relax, reduce stress, and rejuvenate your spirit.
Physical health: Pay attention to your physical health by eating nutritious meals, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and attending to any medical needs. Prioritize preventive healthcare, and don't neglect your own well-being while caring for others.
Practice mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine to help you stay grounded and present in the moment. Mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
Maintain social connections: Stay connected with friends, family members, and support networks outside of your caregiving role. Social interactions can provide emotional support, companionship, and a sense of belonging, which are vital for overall well-being.
Attend to your emotional needs: Acknowledge and process your emotions surrounding caregiving, including feelings of stress, sadness, frustration, or guilt. Consider seeking counseling or therapy to explore your feelings in a safe and supportive environment.

Thank you, Colleen, for the GLOWING review! 🌟
My father had taken a fall and had a brain bleed and surgery, and was suddenly being released from the hospital, but I needed to find a long-term care facility for him. I worked with Bill Schneider, who went above and beyond to try to help me and my family find options. Bill even called me after hours and on the weekend when he was out of town. Bill really understood our needs and concerns. Then, my father suddenly contracted a serious pneumonia and his condition deteriorated so fast, and Bill helped us to find a hospice, supporting us with both compassion and generosity of time. Bill and the team at Senior Living Experts are unmatched in what they do. Please consider this my highest recommendation.

Questions about ?
Hospice care is a specialized type of care focused on providing comfort and support to individuals who are terminally ill and their families. The primary goal of hospice care is to enhance the quality of life for patients with advanced illnesses by managing their symptoms and addressing their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs.
Comfort-oriented care: Hospice care emphasizes pain and symptom management to ensure that patients are as comfortable as possible. This may include medication management, symptom control, and various supportive therapies to alleviate pain, nausea, shortness of breath, and other distressing symptoms.
Holistic approach: Hospice care takes a holistic approach to address the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. It involves a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, spiritual advisors, and volunteers, who work together to provide comprehensive support and care.
Care setting: Hospice care can be provided in various settings, including the patient's home, a hospice facility, nursing home, or hospital, depending on the individual's preferences and needs. Most people prefer to receive hospice care in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by loved ones.
Family support: Hospice care extends support to the patient's family and caregivers, offering counseling, education, and assistance with practical matters such as respite care, financial planning, and bereavement support. Family members are encouraged to participate in the care process and are provided with the necessary resources and guidance to cope with the challenges of caregiving and grief.
End-of-life care: Hospice care is typically provided to individuals with a terminal prognosis, usually with a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease follows its natural course. However, hospice care can be initiated earlier in the disease trajectory if appropriate. The focus shifts from curative treatments to maximizing comfort and quality of life during the end-of-life phase.

A senior living advisor is a professional who assists individuals, typically older adults and their families, in finding suitable housing and care options for seniors. These advisors specialize in helping navigate the various senior living choices available, such as independent living communities, assisted living facilities, memory care, and nursing homes.
Their role involves understanding the specific needs and preferences of the senior, considering factors like healthcare requirements, lifestyle preferences, budget constraints, and location preferences. Senior living advisors often have extensive knowledge of the different types of senior housing and care services, as well as local resources and regulations.
The goal of a senior living advisor is to provide guidance and support throughout the decision-making process, helping families make informed choices that align with the well-being and quality of life of the senior. They may also offer assistance in coordinating visits to potential senior living communities, provide information about amenities and services, and address any concerns or questions that may arise during the transition.

If you know someone in need of help navigating any aspect of senior care, reach out! Our services are free to the families we assist!
