Prevent frostbite by wearing multiple layers of loose, windproof, and waterproof clothing, covering all skin (especially hands, feet, nose, and ears), staying dry, and limiting time in extreme cold. Use mittens instead of gloves, avoid alcohol and smoking, and check for numbness, white skin, or pain regularly.
Essential Prevention Strategies
Dress in Layers: Use a three-layer system: moisture-wicking (synthetic/wool) against the skin, insulating (fleece/wool), and a wind/waterproof outer shell.
Cover All Extremities: Wear warm hats, scarves, and insulated, waterproof mittens or gloves. Mittens are more effective than gloves as they keep fingers together.
Protect Skin: Cover as much skin as possible. Use petroleum jelly or scarves to protect cheeks and noses from wind.
Keep Dry: Remove wet clothing immediately. Wet skin freezes much faster than dry skin.
Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Drink warm, non-alcoholic fluids and eat well-balanced meals. Dehydration increases the risk of frostbite.
Avoid Alcohol and Ni****ne: These substances impair circulation and increase skin sensitivity to cold.
Limit Exposure: When wind chills are extreme, limit time outside to 10–15 minute intervals, and take breaks to warm up indoors.
Check Frequently: Watch for early signs of frostbite (numbness, tingling, or skin color changes) every 30 minutes.
