If you’ve ever enjoyed fresh blueberries, you may have a woman from New Jersey to thank.

In the early 1900s, blueberries were considered a wild fruit that couldn’t be commercially grown.

That changed thanks to Elizabeth Coleman White, who worked on her family’s cranberry farm in Whitesbog Village, NJ.

In 1911, she partnered with botanist Frederick Coville to cultivate wild blueberry plants. By selecting and breeding the best varieties, they developed the first commercially viable highbush blueberries.

What started in the New Jersey Pine Barrens sparked an entirely new agricultural industry.

Today, blueberries are grown worldwide - but it all began in New Jersey, thanks to her vision. Stay tuned for further celebration of female founders and other things we are doing at Monmouth Ocean Small Business Development Center to celebrate

This Women’s History Month, Monmouth Ocean Small Business Development Center celebrates trailblazing entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker, whose business expanded to the NY tri-state area and helped shape the beauty industry to look how it does today.

Born to formerly enslaved parents, Walker built a groundbreaking haircare company that empowered thousands of Black women to become entrepreneurs themselves, truly encapsulating women supporting other women to find success within their own power.
Her success made her widely recognized as America’s first self-made female millionaire.

Walker’s story is a powerful reminder that innovation, determination, and entrepreneurship can transform lives and create opportunity for entire communities.
