We are monitoring a period of active weather that will result in elevated to critical fire concerns. There remains some uncertainty in the exact timing and coverage of thunderstorms, but the current forecast suggests isolated thunderstorms over the Cascades late Friday night becoming scattered across the Inland Northwest on Saturday. Saturday afternoon into the early evening will also bring a period of dry and gusty winds. Do your part to prevent sparks.

Today is Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day, and we're honoring the dedicated men and women who selflessly serve their communities.

Volunteer firefighters respond to emergencies at all hours, train year-round, and sacrifice time with their families to help others when they're needed most.

To every volunteer firefighter across the country: thank you for your courage, your commitment, and everything you do to keep your communities safe.

This morning at 10:15 AM, crews were dispatched to a report of spot fires along US 395 at mileposts 61 and 62, along with a mutual aid request for spot fires at milepost 57 in Franklin County.

Crews arrived and were able to knock down the flames quickly in all three locations.

While returning home from these fires, more spot fires were reported at milepost 75. Crews arrived and found larger fires burning along the east side of the highway. Crews spent about an hour at this location extinguishing the fires.

All units returned back to station and in service around 1:30 PM.

Fire danger remains high all over Eastern Washington.

At 6:00 PM today, crews were dispatched to a reported wheat stubble fire at Franz Rd. and Highway 21. Upon arrival, crews found a small stubble fire and proceeded with a direct attack. Crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire in a quick manner. Fortunately, the adjacent field across the highway is in fallow, which helped crews in containing the blaze. Crews cleared the scene and were back in service around 7:00 PM.

We would like to thank Schafer Ranch for assisting us with the fire.

On another note, we would like to express our support for all of the firefighters and agencies battling the various fires in and around the Spokane area. The day has been a difficult one for the them and we wish the responders the best in their efforts to contain the blazes.

Yesterday at 12:45 PM, crews were dispatched to a reported fire on Batum Rd., approximately 1/2 mile north of Rosenoff Rd. Crews arrived and found a small sagebrush/grass fire with relatively slow spread. With assistance from Odessa Fire Department - Odessa, WA, and local Hutterian colonies, the fire was quickly contained and extinguished. Crews returned from the scene around 1:45 PM.

In addition, The National Weather Service in Spokane has issued a Red Flag Warning for our area today (August 1st) and has designated it as a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) due to the combination of strong winds, low humidity, and critically dry vegetation.

These conditions mean that any fire that starts can spread rapidly and become dangerous in a very short amount of time.

We are asking everyone to do their part to help prevent wildfires today:

🔥 Do not burn outdoors.
🚜 Avoid activities that create sparks, including welding, grinding, or using equipment in dry grass.
🚗 Do not park vehicles on dry vegetation.
🚬 Never discard ci******es or smoking materials from a vehicle.
⛓️ Make sure trailer safety chains are secure and not dragging on the roadway.
🏕️ Use extreme caution with campfires and follow all local restrictions.

If you see smoke or fire, report it immediately by calling 911. Early reporting gives firefighters the best chance to contain a fire before it grows.

Preventing a wildfire is the safest and most effective way to protect our area.

From the US National Weather Service Spokane Washington. According to NWS, the last time a Particularly Dangerous Situation was issued for the area was six years ago.

Please avoid any outdoor activities that could start a fire.

At approximately 4:00 PM today, crews were dispatched to a small brush fire along northbound Highway 395 near milepost 62. Crews were quick to extinguish the flames. A summer fallow field adjacent to the fire prevented any further spread.

In addtion, crews assisted Adams County Fire District #1 with a small wheat fire on Thiel Rd. south of Lind-Ralston Road. That fire was quickly extinguished.

As we head into the weekend, the US National Weather Service Spokane Washington is calling for high winds and low relative humidities that can create critical fire weather conditions.
