You’ve likely heard most coniferous trees referred to as evergreens, but did you know Minnesota is home to a deciduous conifer tree species? 🤔

🌳 Deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which describes all of Minnesota’s broad-leafed trees.

🌲 Conifers are cone-bearing trees with needle-like and/or scaled leaves.

Most conifers have green foliage year-round but tamarack trees, also known as the eastern or American larch, are the exception. Tamarack needles turn yellow and fall off every autumn, making them a deciduous conifer.

Wargo Nature Center has a few tamarack trees near the amphitheater. See if you can spot them on your next visit.

Today marks the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. With the Earth tilted farthest from the sun, daylight is at its lowest. But starting tomorrow, each day will gradually grow longer. 🌅

As the light begins to return, it's a great time to get outside and enjoy everything winter has to offer. What are you looking forward to doing most this winter? ☃️

It may be a bit cold outside for a turtle, but Dash couldn't resist the opportunity to check out all the amazing animal tracks showing up in the snow around Wargo. ❄️

Dash discovered the bounding trail of an American mink on the edge of George Watch Lake. This medium-sized member of the weasel family is commonly found in wetland areas such as cattail marshes. 🐾

While out exploring the snow, Dash also found tracks of deer, squirrels, mice, and birds. Snow makes it much easier to see what the local wildlife are up to outside. If you are interested in learning more about tracking, look at our upcoming activities list. 💡

Snow has arrived and it’s a wonderful time to explore winter around Wargo Nature Center! Check out these January activities to get you outside and enjoying the snow:

1/8 – Nature Play: Winter ☃️
Ages 2-5 + adult $6/child | 10-11 am

1/10 – Winter Wildlife Tracking 🐾
Ages 16+ | $10/person | 10 am - 12:30 pm

With snow comes the perfect opportunity to find and identify winter wildlife tracks.

When identifying tracks, it’s important to consider multiple factors such as location, season, and track details. Key details to observe include the pattern, size, shape, and number of toes.

This image shows a typical set of paired front and hind racoon tracks. Identifying characteristics include the five long toes in each of their hand-like tracks. 🦝 ❄️ 🐾

❄️ Don’t sit around and watch winter unfold, embrace it through adventure. Strap on snowshoes and immerse yourself in the serenity of snow-covered wilderness. ❄️

Snowshoe rental is $5 for up to two hours:

SATURDAY & SUNDAY
Bunker Hills Activities Center (9 am – 4 pm)
C**n Rapids Dam Visitor Center (10 am – 4 pm)

MONDAY – FRIDAY
Wargo Nature Center (9 am – 4 pm)

Wargo also has adaptive equipment (free) and kicksleds (for rent) available to use on-site only.
