UPDATE: As of Monday, January 26th, Greene County is under a travel warning (Red).

From the Indiana Department of Homeland Security:

"Warning (RED)

The highest level of local travel advisory means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. During a "warning" local travel advisory, individuals are directed to:

- Refrain from all travel;
- Comply with necessary emergency measures;
- Cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans; and
- Obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

Additional exceptions to the warning travel advisory are found in Indiana Code 10-14-3-29."

⚠️ Greene County Travel Watch (ORANGE) – Please Stay Home if Possible ⚠️

With Greene County now under a Travel Watch (Orange) due to snow-covered roads, I’m strongly urging everyone to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel tonight and into tomorrow if you can.

Our City of Linton street crews are out working hard to plow and treat roads, but conditions are still hazardous. The best way you can help is to give crews room to work and keep traffic off the roads for emergency vehicles unless it’s absolutely essential.

If you must travel, please go slow, keep extra distance, and watch for plows and emergency vehicles.

UPDATE FROM MAYOR JOHN PREBLE

Earlier today I signed a Declaration of Local Disaster Emergency for the City of Linton, effective December 29, 2025, following the tornado and severe storms that hit our community on December 28.

This declaration gives the city the ability to respond quickly and use every available resource to protect public safety and support recovery efforts. It also allows us to coordinate mutual aid with Greene County, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, other state and federal agencies, and relief organizations including the American Red Cross.

Please continue to use extreme caution throughout Linton and avoid damaged areas and downtown if possible.

Linton is a strong community. Thank you to our first responders, city crews, and volunteers already working to keep people safe and help our city recover. More updates will be shared as soon as they are available.

⚠️ CITY OF LINTON — PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE ⚠️

Due to the severe storm that moved through our area, there are multiple downed power lines across town and a partial building collapse in the downtown area. For everyone’s safety, please avoid traveling into town and stay clear of downtown until further notice.

Emergency responders and utility crews need the roads and impacted areas kept clear so they can work safely and restore conditions as quickly as possible.

Breakfast is donation only. We appreciate all your donations, as we use these funds to to give back to our community.

The Grinch and Santa will be visiting (free photo op!) and maybe even an elf or two will make an appearance during the breakfast.

Evan Witty Park

Last year around the March timeframe, I started speaking about renaming Oak Grove Park the Evan Witty Memorial Park. The plan was to create a fenced-in area for residents to exercise their dogs. After that was the construction of a shelter house and playground in close proximity to the fenced-in area. The idea of a mini-park, if you will!

A quick review of the new name may be in order. In 1999, the area had a ball diamond or two used for Little League practice. The intent was to expand the area and add more baseball fields. While one team was practicing, a thunderstorm suddenly appeared over the area and caused one of the tree limbs to fall, crushing almost six-year-old Evan Witty, son of Mary Ann and Stephen Witty. This tragedy and loss were felt throughout the community and the idea of expanding the area was dropped. Fast forward to last year, and I felt the area should be renamed to remember Evan.

Shortly after the idea was made known, stakes were put in the ground to outline where the fencing should go. It was also noted there was a possible sinkhole close to this location. Several sinkholes had appeared nearby, so this was a concern. Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was contacted to see if they could validate if it was a sinkhole and make the needed correction. This took much longer than I thought. There were also disconnected power lines in the area and active cable lines that had to be dealt with. It also took longer for the fence company to install the fencing. The Township Trustee provided funds to erect the shelter house, which, again, took some time before it was installed. A water line was installed to run from the main line to a spigot located between the shelter house and fencing. An area for parking needed to be prepared and graveled. A formal sign needed to be commissioned as well.

As you can imagine, all this took time, coordination and funds! Almost a year and a half later, the Evan Witty Memorial Park, phase one, is almost ready. The formal sign was completed last Tuesday. The dog park and shelter house have been available for use for some time. With a few more updates and touchups, the park will be official. When those are complete, a dedication, open to the community, will be held. Stay tuned for that announcement.

There are many people to thank for making this idea a reality! The Utility Departments were instrumental in doing what was needed. DNR in ensuring there were no sinkholes. Comcast, or Xfinity, in rerouting cable. The Park Department in maintaining the grounds as it added significantly to their mowing. In singling out one individual, I want to thank John Cotter for his support and action in seeing this idea become a reality!
