- A Busy Year and a Half Ahead for the City of Linton, Indiana -

New Classrooms, gym space, and improvements coming to Linton-Stockton Schools

As if the other items mentioned in this segment of "Coffee with the Mayor" aren't enough, Linton-Stockton School Corporation will be kicking off a major project early next year to add additional classrooms, gym space, upgraded weight room, and other improved spaces to the High School/Middle School and Gym Annex area. They are still working out the details, and I'm sure they will provide a brief on the project when ready. Careful, longterm planning has taken place to ensure that this project in itself will not cause in increase in taxes. Why it matters

Strong schools and strong towns go hand in hand. New classrooms mean the school corporation is planning for growth rather than decline — a healthy sign for any small community — and modern facilities help attract and keep both families and teachers. Additional gym space benefits more than students: school gyms in towns like Linton often serve as gathering places for games, events, and community activities. When families are choosing where to live, schools are usually at the top of the list, so this investment supports the whole community, not just the students in it.

With all that is in the plans for the next. year and a half, when these projects happen, I encourage everyone to be understanding and know that any disruption in your normal routine is only temporary! This will be the time to come together as a community and focus on the end result! At least the pool will be ready next year and available for community use!

☕ The latest episode of Coffee with the Mayor - Part 5 of 6 ☕
- Water Line Replacement Project — Keeping the Water Flowing -

Another project the City has on the horizon is Water Line Replacement. The Preliminary Engineering Report is available at City Hall for public viewing. There are many sub-tasks to this, focused on addressing needed concerns from the well field to local distribution. So far, we've not received word on whether we've been awarded funds from Indiana's State Revolving Fund (SRF). Regardless, this project is needed to "keep the water flowing."

Indiana's State Revolving Fund (SRF) Programs provide low-interest loans to local communities for drinking water, wastewater, and nonpoint source infrastructure projects.

Water infrastructure is easy to take for granted — until it fails.

The attached photo is not an actual picture of Linton's water systems, but we certainly want to avoid issues like this in the future!

- A Busy Year and a Half Ahead for the City of Linton, Indiana -

State Funds Awarded to Replace Lead Water Service Lines

The city recently received word that it has been awarded funding from the State Revolving Fund to meet the mandated requirement of identifying and replacing lead or galvanized water service lines. This has been briefed to the council, and an engineering plan has been prepared. This is accomplished by "pot holing" the area around the meter to accurately identify the type of water line going from the meter to the residence or business. If lead or galvanized is found, it is to be replaced. The funds to accomplish this consist of loan forgiveness, with the rest a low- to zero-interest loan. This is a federal requirement and must be done.

Why it matters

Communities across the country are updating their oldest water service lines to modern materials, and Linton is taking a proactive approach. This is part of a nationwide effort to ensure every water system meets today's standards, and by identifying and replacing older lead or galvanized lines now, the city is investing in water quality for generations to come.

- A Busy Year and a Half Ahead for the City of Linton, Indiana -

Park Road Bridge Replacement — A Safer Turn and Less Flooding

The INDOT project to replace the bridge over the creek near the park has moved forward, with a projected starting date of July 6, 2027. This will cause a temporary disruption in traffic flow while the bridge is being replaced. The end result will see a wider, safer turn onto Park Road from the highway, in addition to increasing the flow of water — hopefully reducing the flooding at the park. However, prior to that, the city has scheduled a project to reroute the water main around the impacted area using a contractor. This alone is no small feat to accomplish. The good news is that INDOT has agreed to refund the city 100% of the cost. This will need to be accomplished late this year to early next year to adhere to the timeline. There will be a lot of activity along the highway. The recent work completed in front of AutoZone is also part of this project.

21 Streets Set for Repaving Starting This Fall

Starting in the August or September timeframe, the contractor hired to execute the Community Crossings Matching Grant will start repaving several streets around town. The list of streets to be replaced is extensive and was provided in a previous Coffee with the Mayor. There are 21 streets or partial streets on the list. Every area of the city will be impacted.

Why it matters

The Community Crossings Matching Grant is a statewide program created by the Indiana legislature and administered by INDOT to help cities, towns, and counties fund local road and bridge improvements. It's competitive — communities across Indiana apply each cycle — and it's designed to stretch local dollars: smaller communities like Linton pay only a small share of the project cost, with the state covering the majority. Without this grant, repaving 21 streets in a single effort would be far out of reach for a small city budget, and streets would instead be addressed a few at a time over many years.

Faster Internet Is Coming — Fiber Work Resumes Soon

The next year and a half will see significant activity around the city of Linton! First, the installation of fiber optic cables around the city has been going on for some time. It has recently paused due to a change in contractor, but a lot of fiber has been laid.

There are two companies working to provide upgraded internet service — one deploying fiber underground and the other focused on using existing poles. Each will provide a valuable service for the community, with work resuming fairly soon.

- Why it matters -

Fiber optic internet is the fastest, most reliable connection available, and for a small rural community like Linton it's a big deal. It lets residents work remotely without leaving town, opens the door to telehealth appointments that would otherwise mean a long drive, and gives students the same online learning tools as any big city. It helps local businesses and farms run modern, connected operations, and it makes Linton more attractive to new families and employers alike. This is a real investment in the city's future.

From the Indiana Department of Homeland Security:

"Warning (RED)

The highest level of local travel advisory means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. During a "warning" local travel advisory, individuals are directed to:

- Refrain from all travel;
- Comply with necessary emergency measures;
- Cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans; and
- Obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

Additional exceptions to the warning travel advisory are found in Indiana Code 10-14-3-29."

⚠️ Greene County Travel Watch (ORANGE) – Please Stay Home if Possible ⚠️

With Greene County now under a Travel Watch (Orange) due to snow-covered roads, I’m strongly urging everyone to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel tonight and into tomorrow if you can.

Our City of Linton street crews are out working hard to plow and treat roads, but conditions are still hazardous. The best way you can help is to give crews room to work and keep traffic off the roads for emergency vehicles unless it’s absolutely essential.

If you must travel, please go slow, keep extra distance, and watch for plows and emergency vehicles.
