Bender Calls Out Giralo & Republicans for “Election Integrity” Hypocrisy

(SOMERS POINT), Lisa Bender, Democratic candidate for Atlantic County Clerk, today called out County Clerk Joe Giralo for his own hypocrisy when it comes to a newly-formed “election integrity task force.”

“At a time when voting rights are under attack by Trump and House Republicans, we need a County Clerk who will protect voting rights, not his own political ambition,” said Lisa Bender. “It’s hypocritical for Joe Giralo to tell us how great of a job he’s doing as County Clerk when his own County Chairman is serving on a sham task force that is fanning the flames of voter fraud and scaring voters. County Republicans have made it clear they support voter suppression with Purdy’s position as a member of the task force and other county leaders suggesting that voters should only be able to cast votes on Election Day. Even locally, this party is committed to the messaging from the top.”

Earlier this month, the State Republican Party announced its supposed “election integrity task force” which includes Atlantic County Republican Chairman Don Purdy. He also appointed himself to the Atlantic County Board of Elections a couple years ago. Purdy is a strong supporter of Giralo’s and recently raised money for Giralo.

“Since this supposed ‘election integrity’ task force is charged with investigating ‘irregularities’ in our elections, can they start with Joe Giralo?” said Bender. “Why did mail-in ballots go out so late this primary election? If this task force wants to do something productive, they should look into why Atlantic County voters, yet again, were treated so poorly when compared to the other 20 counties in New Jersey.”

As County Clerk, Lisa Bender will make sure mail-in ballots arrive on time, protect everyone’s right to vote, and will crack down on ballot harvesting and any efforts to evade our election laws.

**Suleiman Calls for AG's Office to Investigate Multi-Year Mail-In Ballot Delivery Fiasco in Atlantic County**

(Galloway) Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman today called on the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office to open an investigation into why Atlantic County’s delivery of Vote by Mail ballots has been delayed once again.

“It’s truly embarrassing how incompetent the Atlantic County Clerk’s Office is at getting Vote by Mail ballots out on time,” said Suleiman. “These delays have been going on for the past four years. This gross incompetence by the Clerk’s Office, and the ballot printer, and/or the mailhouse is unacceptable. I’ve been voting by mail for years and I’m finally receiving my ballot today.”

Atlantic County government hires a ballot printer to print the physical ballots and the printer uses a mailhouse, which is responsible for the physical delivery of the addressed and stamped ballots to the post office for delivery.

Suleiman is asking the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the Atlantic County Clerk’s Office, the ballot printer, Royal Printing Services in West New York, and the printer’s mailhouse, Universal Mailings in Piscataway, to uncover when ballots were printed, when they were dropped off to the mailhouse, and when the mailhouse actually delivered them to the United States Postal Service. It has been almost two weeks since New Jersey law required Vote by Mail to commence, but most voters in Atlantic County have either not received their mail-in ballots or are just getting their ballots today.

“Every other county can get ballots out on time so there’s no excuse for Atlantic County,” said Suleiman. “Enough is enough. We need the state to get involved here and hold people accountable. I am imploring the Attorney General’s Office to take appropriate action.”

Per state law, Vote by Mail ballots were supposed to be forwarded to voters beginning on Saturday, April 18. Nearly every other county in New Jersey has already reported completed ballots being returned except Atlantic County.

Lisa Bender, Democratic candidate for Atlantic County Clerk, released the following statement about yet another delay in Vote by Mail ballots arriving in Atlantic County:

"While nearly every other county has seen completed mail-in ballots being returned, most people in Atlantic County have not yet received their ballots," said Bender. "This is a frequent occurrence in Atlantic County. Instead of taking responsibility, Clerk Giralo is quick to blame the printer, the mail house, or the Postal Service for these delays. It's his name on the door. He needs to own the fact that, again, ballots have not hit mailboxes on time."

"Vote by Mail ballots needed to commence on Saturday, April 18. My pledge as your County Clerk is to do everything I can to make sure that ballots always arrive within days of that commencement date. When I have complaints from residents in Hamilton, Galloway, Margate, and everywhere in between, it undermines faith in our elections."
