Special thanks to Nashua Chief Steve Buxton and city Emergency Management Director Emily Martuscello for a great presentation on the active shooter incident at a country club in the city. Also thanks to Ray Lincoln from United Diagnostic, vendor for one of the first in the nation cancer screening program for career firefighters and retirees. 87 NH Fire Chiefs attended the seminars and monthly meeting of the New Hampshire Association of Fire Chiefs. Thanks to all!

NEW HAMPSHIRE ASSOCIATION OF FIRE CHIEFS STATEMENT ON THE PROPOSED GROUP II RETIREMENT LEGISLATION.

The New Hampshire Association of Fire Chiefs (NHAFC) conveyed our strong support for the provisions included in HB 2 which addressed Group II retirement benefits in both the House and the Senate. We were very pleased when both bodies passed language which would have enacted the proposal introduced, and funded, by Governor Ayotte in her budget.

We are very concerned that the recent changes by the Committee of Conference will be a step backward in our efforts to retain existing talent within Fire Departments across New Hampshire.

As more senior leaders within Departments learn of the language which has been adopted, it has created heightened concern that we may see many talented individuals retire earlier than they would have otherwise, in order to avoid the impacts of the proposal. This could come at a time when it is far more difficult to attract new members to the fire service. Further, the HB 2 language runs counter the recent efforts of the State of NH to assist with recruitment and retention of first response professionals.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, and members of the NHAFC, we would urge the Legislature to more carefully consider their actions in that they will compound an existing challenge for our Departments to retain the talent we need.
