On April 21, 2026, the American Legion hosted its annual Boys and Girls County event, whereby area students are given the opportunity to dive deeper into how county government works. This year, students from Litchfield, Acton/Cosmos/Grove City and Eden Valley/Watkins school districts toured government buildings, spent time in county government offices and the County Board Meeting observing day-to-day operations, toured law enforcement offices and participated in a mock trial. For over 40 years, the Litchfield American Legion has collaborated with Meeker County to provide students a day of exploration and interaction of local career opportunities that are sometimes overlooked. Thank you to the American Legion and area students for another great event!

Beginning this year, Minnesota will allow rifles statewide for deer hunting, removing the decades-old shotgun-only zones, but additionally permitting each county to maintain local shotgun restrictions, if desired. Counties have until May 5th to make the decision to stay a shotgun-only area, or allow rifles for deer hunting. Many counties have held public hearings to gather comments from residents. Meeker County held a well-attended public hearing on February 17th and based on the feedback from that meeting, Meeker County Commissioners decided to allow rifles beginning with the 2026 deer hunting season. Among Meeker County’s neighbors, McLeod, Renville, Stearns, and Wright Counties have opted to allow rifles and Kandiyohi County is sticking with the shotgun restrictions.

To learn more hunting regulations, including for deer hunting, please visit the MN DNR’s website.

Minnesotans are encouraged to safely dispose of old medications during Prescription Drug Take Back Day, happening tomorrow (Saturday, April 25). The event allows people to get rid of old, unused medications, from opioids to antibiotics. To find a collection event near you, visit the link below.

Several communities have year-round collection options as well. In Meeker County, there is a secure receptacle in the lobby of the Law Enforcement Center at 326 N Ramsey Avenue in Litchfield.

Remember: It is NEVER recommended to throw old medications in the trash or sewer as they can contaminate community water supplies.

The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat. DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications fro...
