Meeker County contains many bodies lot of water on which to enjoy recreational activities. There are over 110 named lakes, 3 branches of the Crow River, as well as many creeks, streams, drainage ditches, ponds and wetlands. Under MN Statute 86B.105, the Sheriff has the duty to maintain water safety through a program of:
- Search and rescue
- Buoying and marking waterways
- Patrolling lakes and rivers
- Removing navigational hazards
- Inspection of watercraft for rent, lease or hire
- Investigation of watercraft accidents and drownings
- Reporting all finds to the commissioner

The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office takes boating/water safety very seriously and maintains a Boat and Water Unit utilizing 4 patrol boats for use throughout the County to accomplish the duties as listed above.

Did you know Meeker County has a Law Library intended to be a free self-help research resource to all members of the public? The library is not staffed, but offers a variety of wonderful resources for caselaw, statutes, and many other helpful materials for both criminal and civil law. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, began after the Civil War to honor fallen soldiers. After WWI, the observance expanded to honor all American military personnel who died in any war, and the name was officially changed to Memorial Day. Congress declared it a federal holiday in 1971.

A question we are commonly asked is, "do I need a burn permit, and how do I get one?"

Burning permits are issued by the MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and grants the holder the right to burn small amounts of dry leaves/brush/untreated wood if the weather conditions do not pose a fire hazard. There are different ways to purchase a burning permit:

Online:
Permits can be purchased online at the DNR website (see below) for a minimal fee of $5. Counties can individually decide if they honor online burning permits, and there is an updated list of each county on the DNR website. The online permit is good for one year and needs to be activated each time you burn.

Paper Permit:
You can get a paper permit at no charge through a DNR Forestry office or active fire warden. These permits are active for 3 continuous days.

Regardless of how you acquire a permit, it is always a good idea to check the DNR website for any current burning restrictions. Communities can and do develop their own restrictions in addition to state restrictions based on weather conditions.

Remember, safety is always the first and most important consideration in any burning situation.

A burning permit grants the individual holder the right to burn small amounts of dry leaves, plant clippings, brush, and clean untreated-unpainted wood as long as weather conditions do not pose a fire hazard.
