RWMWD is proud to announce that the Lake Phalen shoreline restoration has received a Natural Shoreline Award from the East Metro Water Resource Education Program (EMWREP) at Washington Conservation District! The recognition highlights two decades of efforts to replace turf with native wildflowers, shrubs, trees, and deep-rooted vegetation. With nearly two miles of restored shoreline, expansive oak woodlands, and multiple public access points, Phalen serves as a practical restoration model for Minnesota communities revitalizing urban lake shorelines.

The bad news: Much of the metro area is in a severe drought, which can lead to those fall leaves changing earlier, less vibrant colors, and earlier leaf drop. Have you seen sumac already turning red along the roads? Us too.

The good news: You can still get your fall color fix from native prairie plants like Little Bluestem, Black Eyed Susan, Purple Stemmed Aster, and Showy Goldenrod (it's not Ragweed, we promise).

You can also scoop up some fall plants of your own at the Blue Thumb Fall Native Plant Sale on September 19th, 10 am - 1 pm at Valley Community Presbyterian Church in Golden Valley. Looking for something closer to home? Check out a nearby native plant nursery (link in comments)

Thanks for joining us for our second Watershed Week from July 19 - 25! Twenty-eight people took part in the Landscape Ecology Tour and 63 joined Native Plant Bingo; poor air quality meant we had to wait until 2027 for the second Bikes and Blooms. Huge thanks to the volunteers and staff who made this watershed celebration possible.

We're seeking a local artist to help recognize inspirational volunteers and clean water champions.

The Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District invites Twin Cities artists to design and handcraft 4–5 Watershed Excellence Awards (budget $250–$300 each) to honor volunteers, partners, and community members protecting our water. Pieces will be presented at our November recognition dinner.

Proposal deadline: August 14
Twin Cities metro artists encouraged to apply.

In 1926, the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities was so polluted that it had become a dead zone. Today, the river thrives. The Sacred Water Shared Future campaign is celebrating 100 years of restoration through local events, art, and stewardship. This program is a partnership between nonprofits and government agencies.

We are inviting everyone to help write the river’s next chapter. Whether you are interested in paddling tours and history lectures, or art installations and volunteer cleanups, there are countless ways to explore the river and define what it means to you.
