Mission: Rainbow Wildlife Rescue in Little Elm, Texas - lending orphaned wildlife a helping hand and lower the euthanasia rate of companion animals. - Focus on education to help humans understand more about our natural resources and learn to value them. - Counteract the acts of human carelessness by leaving behind animals hurt by cars, guns, ignorance and plain misconception. - Clearing up myths and old wives tales about our urban wildlife. My name is Birgit Sommer. I am a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for the State of Texas, director of the Rainbow Wildlife Rescue in Dallas, TX , a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. I, like many other licensed wildlife rehabilitators, work out of my own home and volunteer my time and just about every spare cent I can gather towards animal rescue efforts and public wildlife education. No local or state funding is available for animal caging, veterinary care, medicine and food. That's why most rehabilitators gratefully accept donations towards the care of animals they receive from the public.

Scrap the trap when evicting wildlife

As a wildlife rehabilitator, I would like to share once more information about trapping and releasing wildlife at a different location. Whereas I very very much appreciate the intention of this well-meant approach, in most cases this is a death sentence to the animal, which most folks are not aware of.

The reasons for that are that, regardless of species:
a) the new location has most likely already a "leader" for that part of the territory and often will kill a new intruder;
b) the relocated animal has no idea where the food sources are;
c) it has also no idea where the safe places are to sleep and hide from predators;
d) since most of them are social, they also lose all contact and protection of their herd/colony/mate etc. (many mate for life, some might be nursing).

It is recommended to leave them be and discourage and/or block access to unwanted locations. There are many ways to deter wildlife without having to harm or kill it.

This article has some great information:

I just downloaded the rabies stats from the TX Health Dep and created a 10-year-summary to give you an idea of what animal is more or less at risk than you originally thought and to provide a bigger picture. Coyotes rank the absolute lowest for example. I will also post a link to an article I wrote years ago about the "Real Facts of Rabies', since there are so many myths out there which often results in the unnecessary death of an animal.

Rainbow Wildlife Rescue

05/18/2016

The Rainbow Wildlife Rescue has moved to Little Elm, Texas. We have found that our active rescue efforts are not needed here and have therefore suspended our efforts regarding live wildlife rehabilitation.

HOWEVER, since we have gathered a huge amount of knowledge and information the past 14 years of rescuing and raising not only thousands wildlife and domesticated pets, but also working with the public and various organizations, we have decided to now focus on education to share this knowledge.

In regards of this new path of efforts, we are now looking for volunteers that are comfortable in public speaking and would like to help us in assisting to sort through all the information in order to develop a curriculum we can offer to schools and the broader public, give classes and workshops, carry the message and most likely safe even more animals this way than with our own hands.

Rescue fund: $0
Kitten fund : $25
Everyone, especially the wildlife supporters! I have an announcement to make and am going to need your help.
After long debating, thinking and tossing everything around, I decided to re-open the Rainbow Wildlife Rescue within legal limits. I will need to build minimum standard facilities, which will fall into the upcoming renovation for the house we have planned. I figured it's a great opportunity to maybe build an Atrium or something for birds and some smaller, transportable cages outside for smaller critters.
Having done the math with the basics, paperwork, facilities, a $1000 will get me started by next spring.
In addition I need to raise another $300 to get these kittens fully vetted.

Our Facebook site with the past activities until we had to close is here: https://www.facebook.com/rainbowwildlife?ref=br_rs
I appreciate all the support and will update the amount raised daily in my status! Thank you advance!

I just signed this petition and would like everyone who cares about our wildlife to do the same. I wish so very much that those animal killers out there would switch their guns with a camera and adopt that rule "if you do not do it to your dog, don't do it to any other animal".

It's been confirmed -- the Grand Canyon Wolf has been slain. Demand justice! (62396 signatures on petition)

Yesterday I saw a little Mockingbird fledgling on the ground, sitting all still, trying to blend in. The first reaction of the people I was with was to pick it up, assuming it fell out of the nest and therefore it will die. NOT SO! Here's why:
Nests are not the safe place we like to think of; rather the opposite, it's a presentation platter for predators, so little birds get out the nest as soon as they can, without being able to fly yet. They have more opportunities to hide on the ground and the parents continue to feed them.
SO IF YOU SEE A BABY BIRD ON THE GROUND, PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE! Unless it's in immediate danger or hurt, there is no reason to interfere. Under no circumstances should you take the bird away from the area and kidnap it from its parents. If there's danger, place bird in a shoebox or something and place box in a tree, out of harms way. If injured, google "wildlife rehabilitator near me" and call for advise.
I think it's important to add that it is a MYTH that momma birds won't take back their babies after humans have touched them because they smell differently. Please know that most birds don't even have a sense of smell...it's a myth. That goes for almost all animal babies. Even the ones that can smell. But that doesn't mean you can go ahead and play and cuddle with them...respect the wild in the wild and play and cuddle with your domesticated pets .

Overnight, a baby bird fell out of it's nest at my daughter's apartment complex. Between the traffic in and out and the heat, I can't imagine he or she will stay safe. I think it's a little dove. Who can we contact to help this little one?
Hello, I am hoping to find an organization that will allow me and my daughter to visit that will provide her with educational information about the animals you rescue. We are long-time rescuers of feral cats and she is interested in other types of rescues. We are happy to be put to work and bring donations if that is helpful. Thanks!
This poor wee opossum is paralyzed. We found him/her tonight & we’re not sure if it will make it, but if it does, do you have anywhere you know of that can take it in, or have any advice on how we can better care for it? We were hoping it was just pretending to be hurt, but upon inspection & it dragging its back legs when it tries to move, we didn’t have the heart to just leave it.
Need help rescued this baby from a six foot bull snake yesterday. His siblings were already dead. He is still alive
Can anyone give me advice for these two little ones. Someone brought them in to our vet clinic.
Question: found a baby wren whose nest was chopped down by our landscapers at work :( he has been without his mom for three + hours so i finally brought him inside. All of the bird rescues i am calling are not answering. What can i do to help him? I found your video on you-tube, showing how you feed them meal worms...is this an okay choice? Can i just pick these up at the pet store. TIA
