About the symbolism of the pink triangle.

Pride is filled with symbolism, including the pink triangle.

Q: Why is this symbol significant?
A: Pink triangles were originally used in concentration camps to identify gay prisoners. Initially intended as a badge of shame, it was later reappropriated as a positive symbol of self-identity.

Visiting family for the holidays can be an anxiety-inducing affair, but for many of our LGBTQ+ loved ones, a lot can be at stake. Whether it’s fear of being outed, navigating tense conversations from unsupportive family members, or negative family reactions to meeting a partner or spouse, there are a LOT of worst case scenarios to potentially brace for.

While there are countless great articles about how LGBTQ+ people can better handle holiday stress and conflict, few resources share how allies can be part of creating a supportive and inclusive space for their LGBTQ+ friends this time of year.

PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program has some great tips for how to be an ally to your LGBTQ+ loved ones this holiday season! Check out our resource, How to Ally for the Holidays, today at pflag.org/resource/how-to-ally-for-the-holidays ❄️

“Why Pride?” 🏳️‍🌈

One of many reasons…

This is a win for LGBTQIA+ rights and we applaud the SCOTUS decision. Remember, there is no time for complacency as we advocate for equality. 💜

Today, the Supreme Court declined to revisit the landmark case that recognized the constitutional right to same-sex marriage.

Today's decision reminds us that love wins—and motivates us to continue fighting to protect the rights of all people.

🕯️Who was Matthew Shepard?
Described by friends and family as kind and easy to talk to, Matthew Shepard was a college student and victim of one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes in American history. His memorial service garnered immense national and international media attention, which brought Matt’s story to the forefront of the fight against bigotry and hate. Just over a decade later (in 2009), the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act—a federal law against bias crimes directed at le***an, gay, bisexual, or transgender people—was passed.

The life and death of Matthew Shepard changed the way we talk about, and deal with, anti-LGBTQ+ hate in the United States. Since his death, Matt’s legacy has challenged and inspired millions of individuals to replace hate with understanding, compassion, and acceptance.

Today we remember Matthew Shepard, and share gratitude for our friends at Matthew Shepard Foundation, who continue to do such critical work in his honor.

Matthew, you are gone but never forgotten.🕯️🌈

From our hearts - THANK YOU!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Through the incredible Mohawk Valley Gives program provided by Community Foundation & UpMobility, we raised nearly $16,000!

But this is about more than money. Hate & intolerance continue to grow louder, making it even more difficult for the LGBTQIA+ community to exist safely. Seeing the love shine through with each donation these past few days has reminded us that our love is louder than their hate. And these financial resources will help us continue our efforts to increase visibility and awareness surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community.

We are stronger together so let’s

Again, to everyone who donated and helped spread the word - You are part of this journey in ways big & small, all of which matter. Thank you. 🩷
