BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY MESSAGE

As students throughout Morrison County prepare to return to school, we would like to take a moment and remind everyone that we all have a role in keeping our children safe.

The beginning of a new school year is an exciting time for students and families, but it also means increased traffic, school buses, pedestrians, bicyclists, and young drivers on our roads. We would encourage everyone to slow down, pay attention, and remember that getting to school safely is more important than getting there quickly.

Our office would like to offer a few reminders as the school year begins:

School Bus Safety

•When school buses’ red lights begin flashing, you must stop, no exceptions. The stop needs to be at least 20’ away from the school bus. This applies whether the stop arm is extended or not.

•Watch carefully for children crossing the roadway near bus stops. Children may not always be aware of approaching traffic.

•Parents should remind children to stay away from the roadway while waiting for the bus and to follow the bus driver’s instructions.

Slow Down in School Areas

Drivers should expect increased congestion around schools during drop-off and dismissal times. Put the phone down, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, obey posted speed limits, and be prepared for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway.
Report Threats and Concerning Behavior

Our office would also like to remind students and parents that threats of violence or other dangerous behavior should never be ignored.

If you see something or hear something that concerns you, say something. Reporting a concern does not mean you are accusing someone of committing a crime. It means you are giving a responsible adult and law enforcement an opportunity to evaluate the information and take appropriate action if needed.

Keeping our children safe requires all of us to pay attention, communicate, and speak up when something doesn't look or feel right.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office wishes all students, parents, teachers, administrators, and school staff a safe and successful 2026-27 school year. Please be safe and watch for school buses and children on your commutes!

8/17/2026 at 7:22PM- The National Weather Service has issued a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR WESTERN MORRISON COUNTY UNTIL 7:45PM. At 7:11PM, a severe thunderstorm was located near Randall, or 14 miles northwest of Little Falls, moving southeast at 40 mph. 60 mph wind gusts and small hail. Radar indicated. Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from
windows. This storm is capable of producing damaging winds.

On Friday, September 11, we invite our entire community to come together in solemn remembrance and unity at our annual 9/11 Service. The ceremony will be held outside in the southwest parking lot of the Government Center, near the Law Enforcement Memorial, and will begin promptly at 8:00 AM.

This 15- to 20-minute service is a time to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, to show our respect for the victims and their families, and to recognize the courage and sacrifice of our first responders and military personnel—both then and now.

This moment of reflection is meaningful not just for law enforcement, but for every citizen who values service, sacrifice, and community. Whether you come alone, with family, friends, or coworkers, your presence is a powerful way to say: We remember and we stand united.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. Thank you for standing with us!

I was honored to be one of the speakers today at the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery. Today we honored our 4 American heroes who were killed in the Benghazi terrorist attack on September 11, 2012. They were U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, State Department Officer Sean Smith, Navy Seals Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

We were grateful to have Cheryl Bennett, Tyrone Woods’ mother, with us. Additionally, we were honored to have a bus load of Gold Star Families present. We made a promise that their loved ones will never be forgotten and we will continue to honor and remember their sacrifices for our freedoms.

Thank you to the Veterans, American Legion Riders, and to everyone who made this event possible.
