We have efforts underway to bring a K-9 program to the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, and we’re grateful to share that we have already received several donations toward making that goal a reality.
This effort was started by Leon Boyea, owner of Brew 56 and Sergeant of our Reserve Deputy Program. Leon has seen firsthand the value a properly trained K-9 can bring to law enforcement—especially when it comes to locating illegal drugs, finding people or evidence, and helping officers safely resolve dangerous situations. He took it upon himself to begin reaching out and gathering community support for the program.
The K-9 we are working toward would be a dual-purpose law enforcement dog. That means its role would go well beyond narcotics detection. The dog would also be trained for:
Tracking missing persons or fleeing suspects
Locating articles or evidence
Narcotics detection
Criminal apprehension when circumstances require it
A K-9 is another tool available to deputies—not something used on every call or every person. Like any other law enforcement tool, its use would be based on the circumstances, proper training, policy, and the law.
For a rural agency, that capability can make a meaningful difference. Whether it is helping locate a missing child, finding evidence that might otherwise be overlooked, detecting illegal drugs being brought into our community, or assisting deputies during a dangerous incident, the ultimate goal is the same: better public safety for Rice County.
