Healthier lifestyle choices may have a significant impact on keeping your eyes healthier. Staying active and eating well can help lower your risk for disease and conditions that contribute to vision diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Vision may change with age, but vision loss isn’t a normal part of aging.

These steps can help protect your vision:
• Incorporate zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and lean protein into your diet.
• Get adequate sleep.
• Wear sunglasses or a hat to protect your eyes.
• Take breaks from looking at screens.
• Remove your contacts when you sleep.
• Get regular eye exams.
• Use low-vision tools to help reduce eye strain – glasses, smartphone apps to read smaller print out loud, and magnifiers.
• Consider quitting smoking if you are a smoker.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited cause of autism and intellectual disabilities worldwide. It occurs when a single gene on the X chromosome ceases to function. This gene is needed to synthesize a protein responsible for brain development and there is no cure presently.

Intellectual disabilities associated with FXS are anxiety, ADHD, seizures, and autism.
A reminder the Lucet Autism Resource Center is our most comprehensive hub for empowered caregiving for autism, understanding a diagnosis, and care options. It’s also where members can connect with our Autism Resource Program for assistance in obtaining a diagnosis, treatment authorization and guidance in utilizing their benefits. Routine hearing screenings are a part of your ARBenefits Health Plan. You are covered for one screening every three years with your Primary Care Physician or a specialist and if you are under the age of 19, they are covered 100% by the Plan. If you are over the age of 19, then it is a $25 copay with your P*P and $50 copay with a specialist.

Schedule a hearing screening today if you haven’t had one within the last three years to make sure your ears are functioning to their fullest.

National Polyphenol Day is dedicated to polyphenols, which is a type of micronutrient found in plants. These micronutrients work as natural energy boosters and can give a variety of health benefits like mental clarity and a healthy heart. Extra-virgin olive oil, dark chocolate, and dark-colored fruits like pomegranates and chokeberries are examples of polyphenol-rich foods.

Have you heard of the FDA Flush List?? Medications on the flush list are those (1) sought-after for their misuse and/or abuse potential and (2) that can result in death from one dose if inappropriately taken. If children, adults, or pets in your home accidentally or intentionally ingest, touch, misuse, or abuse a medicine on the flush list, they can suffer serious consequences including death.

If you don’t have a drug take-back location near you or if drug mail-back envelopes are not available to you, check the FDA’s Flush List to see if your medicine is on the list.
