Arkansas Water Plan

Arkansas Water Plan The Arkansas Water Plan is a comprehensive plan for the orderly development of the state's water and related land resources.

1969 – The Arkansas Legislature passed Act 217 making the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission responsible for water planning at the state level and the development of the first Arkansas State Water Plan. Since its completion and publication in 1975, the plan has served as a guide for efficient development of land and water resources.

Austin Oldenburgh and several members of his Water Quality class recently sampled Baldwin Creek, near St. Paul. They collected water samples, measured flow, measured velocity and took a macro-invertebrate sample to assess water quality.

Oldenburgh is an environemental, soil and water major in our Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences.

The class focuses on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of natural waters.

How's that for real world experience and getting out in the field?

This project is part of the long-term implementation of the Arkansas Water Plan recommendations of 1990 to reduce "non-point" source pollution. Reduction of sediment, nutrient, and pollutant runoff to our lakes, streams, and rivers improves water quality. The Natural Resources Commission, through its Non-Point Source Pollution Management Program, is helping finance this work on Main Street in Little Rock. Thousands of visitors to the city will see water quality work in action.

The top of the photo shows water standing where the regular drainage system is still in use. The bottom half shows the lack of standing water where the Low Impact Development system is in place.
