Arkansas Access to Justice

Arkansas Access to Justice We believe that every Arkansan deserves justice, regardless of whether they can afford a lawyer.

Our mission is coordinate statewide efforts to ensure that all Arkansans have a fair opportunity to be heard in court in civil matters, not just those who can afford legal representation. We work with a variety of other partners who share our vision, and together, we undertake innovative projects to accomplish this mission, as well as efforts to increase the financial and pro bono resources available to meet the civil legal needs of low-income Arkansans.

Access to justice should not be limited by a lack of technology or resources. For many Arkansans, barriers such as not having access to a computer, reliable internet service, or a printer can make it significantly more difficult to obtain legal information, complete court forms, and navigate the legal system. Expanding free public access to these essential resources is a critical step toward ensuring equal access to justice for all.

Arkansas Access to Justice sincerely thanks the Washington County Circuit Court and the Administrative Office of the Courts for its partnership and commitment to the community through the placement of a legal resource kiosk in a thoughtfully selected location within the courthouse.

This kiosk will provide Washington County residents with free access to important legal resources and tools through https://arcourtkiosk.org/ helping bridge the digital divide for individuals and families in need of support.

We extend special appreciation to Chief Clerk Kyle Sylvester for his dedication to serving the residents of Washington County and for recognizing the importance of accessible legal resources within the community.

We also thank the Administrative Judge Beth Storey Bryan, and Chief Deputy Clerk Laura Geurian, for their leadership and support in making this initiative possible. Their collaboration demonstrates a meaningful commitment to advancing access to justice throughout Arkansas.

What does it actually cost when someone misses court? Not just for the court, but for the person who couldn't make it through the door? Join us May 8 with guest researchers from the National Center for State Courts and the chief clerk of Berryville District Court. Together, we'll walk through national data on missed appearances and a real Arkansas success story: Berryville District Court translated court notices into four languages and FTAs among limited English speakers dropped significantly. We'll also look at statewide efforts to expand access beyond language, from courthouse kiosks and court reminder programs to plain-language design and the emerging Community Justice Worker model.

This CLE is designed for judges, attorneys, court administrators, legislators, and anyone working at the intersection of court access and system design. It is free and open to the public.

9 counties. 1 mission: Access to Justice. ⚖️

Last Friday, our fabulous pro bono team used the Arkansas Free Legal Answers platform to serve 11 Arkansans in need.

Thanks to Attorneys Paul Bowen, Yolanda Greyson, and Edith Chavez De Oseguera, as well as law students Gabriella Rancifer, Wilson Strange, Danielle Alfonso, Alexis Hodne, Shakyla Hill, and Autumn Powell, in just one day, we provided legal aid to residents in Prairie, Arkansas, Garland, Franklin, Benton, Lonoke, Greene, Sebastian, and Pulaski Counties with questions in family law, landlord-tenant law, consumer debt, and critical protective orders.

This effort highlights the power of Free Legal Answers—a vital tool capable of reaching every single county across the state.

Our mission of access to justice is fueled by the unwavering support of our partners: the Arkansas Bar Foundation, the Arkansas Bar Association, the UA Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law, the University of Arkansas School of Law, and the American Bar Association.

But the work is not over—69 Arkansans are still waiting to get help. Can you donate 1 hour of your time? Join us for our May virtual clinics (May 1, 15, 29) from 12-1 pm (Zoom link provided after enrollment) or our upcoming NWA clinic.
