St. Francis House

St. Francis House An outreach of the Episcopal Church, St. Francis House serves the critical needs of the underserved in our community. The St. In 1988, St.

Francis House is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in January 1970 as a social outreach of the Episcopal Church to the State of Arkansas. It originated, in part, as a continuation of the ministry of St. Phillip’s Church, an Episcopal mission in Little Rock that was comprised of black worshippers over its 86-year existence. Its building and property were sold as part of the urban rene

wal project which became Interstate-630. The early program was one of outreach to the neighborhood which included informal personal counseling, small group study, social fellowship, and recreation. Its goal was to serve as a “bridge” between the black and white communities caused by the tension of school and neighborhood segregation. It quickly became apparent the work of St. Francis House would become overwhelmingly that of striving to meet the pressing material needs of people in need, therefore, it dedicated itself to responding quickly to the needs of those who seek help, especially giving aid to those who are not eligible for assistance from other agencies. The current emphasis of the Community Outreach department is to provide immediate material assistance (food, medicine, shelter, clothing, utility and rent payments, transportation, and other such basic needs) to clients in crisis situations. Francis House was granted a contract with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to house homeless veterans. The program provides a setting for homeless veterans, including the services of counseling, transitional housing, meals, laundry, employment services, and activities. Veterans services have expanded to include Supportive Services for Veterans and Families (SSVF) for the state of Arkansas and employment assistance. In accordance with federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity.

🇺🇸“It Can Be Done”

KW is a Navy Veteran who served from 1990 – 1993 during the Persian Gulf War. She ended up doing two tours and being in Operation Desert Storm / Desert Sheild. She fearfully fought for our country, but the biggest struggle was when she came home. She came home to her family but had to adjust to civilian life. Veteran KW struggled to handle the civilian world she came home to due to not having the structure she had while in service. Lacking the structure in her civilian life, veteran KW’s life started to turn upside down on her. While KW’s life fell apart, she came to St. Francis House to get her life back on track. While being at St. Francis House, veteran KW started to get things in order and had the support and structure she needed.
Veteran KW had this to say about St. Francis House, “St. Francis House provided every opportunity for me. They laid the groundwork and I drove the car. St. Francis House’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families program helped me with everything I needed”. While at St. Francis House, Veteran KW was able to get her SSDI and VA Disability started and was able to obtain permanent housing in Hot Springs. Veteran KW said she loves her little place in Hot Springs and has started to grow her tomato plant. Veteran KW is proud of her accomplishment of admitting she needed help and has been on her medication for the past 16 Months to help her become stable.
Veteran KW’s future plan is to find somewhere to volunteer in Hot Springs. She would like to work with an animal shelter and give back to those who need it. When asked what advice she would give another veteran in her situation, she had this to say, “It can be done. Even through the worst of the worst. Just pick yourself up and dig in and do it. Work the program and all will be okay”.

💡🩵Every dollar makes a difference!

This week, the St. Francis House Utility Assistance Program distributed $1,111.79 to help local families and individuals facing immediate utility disconnections.

One of those helped was Ms. FG, a senior citizen living alone. While her gas bill represented the smallest financial assistance payout of the week, the impact was anything but small. Thanks to this support, Ms. FG can continue cooking meals at home and maintaining a safe, comfortable living environment.

Ms. FG is also a regular visitor to our food pantry, relying on those resources to help stretch her limited budget each month. Stories like hers remind us that even a modest act of assistance can provide dignity, stability, and hope.

Thank you to everyone who supports St. Francis House and makes these life changing moments possible. Together, we are helping our neighbors remain safe, nourished, and connected to the resources they need.
