Between 1982 and 2007, interest in reading declined by nearly 20% for the United States population; and 30% of young adults aged 18–24 read at a low literacy level. Many individuals, because of their inability to read, rebel, commit crimes, and become incarcerated. In juvenile correctional facilities, youth enter with intense educational, mental health, medical, and social needs. A significant number of incarcerated juveniles have experienced school failure, retention, and are marginally literate or illiterate. However, these examples do not only affect youth, this is a major issue in society as a whole. Effective literacy programs could contribute to the advancement of all individuals in society and strengthen their future. Cancer Research
Thanks to advances in detection and treatment, 13 million American cancer survivors are alive today, and the numbers are growing. Although research has begun to document the issues faced by cancer survivors, many questions remain. Additionally, with these questions remaining unanswered among persons touched by cancer and the cure for cancer has not been established. The Dr. A.D. Bland Foundation is committed to answering these questions and fighting with these survivors to find the cure.
