โšฝ ๐ŸŸฅ World Day Against Child Labor 2026

The International Labour Organizationโ€™s theme this year is "Red Card to Child Labor: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults" highlighting the critical link between unacceptable child labor, the need to protect children, and sustainable livelihoods for adults. Today is a reminder that protecting children requires collective action. As the world prepares for the FIFA World Cup, partners across travel, tourism and sports are stepping up through initiatives like โ€” helping communities recognize and prevent exploitation.

Since 2002, Winrock and our local partners have worked in more than 25 countries to protect over 75,000 children from exploitative child labor in sectors including cocoa, cotton, tea, to***co, rubber and fisheries, while supporting more than 134,000 households.

Our approach focuses on the whole family: helping parents access sustainable livelihoods, strengthening education and protection for children, and partnering with governments, businesses and communities to build lasting solutions. By improving agricultural productivity, strengthening supply chain safeguards and addressing the root causes of child labor, we're helping create pathways to resilience for children and their families.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ The Director's Take

We're launching a new series featuring perspectives from Winrock leaders on the issues shaping our work around the world.

In our first installment, Stephanie Lillegard, our Human Rights portfolio director, shares why lasting systems change must be rooted in human rights and how protecting people from trafficking, child labor and exploitation helps build stronger, more resilient communities.

As Winrock's new strategic plan focuses on strengthening rural communities and the systems they depend on, Stephanie explores why human rights safeguards are not separate from resilience; they're foundational to it.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "We know that 61% of all child labor is an agricultural supply chains. In addition to working to improve agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods, we are integrating safeguards that reduce exploitation of workers who are often seasonal and part of an informal and often invisible workforce."

For decades, Winrock International has partnered with โ€™s farmers, universities, businesses and public institutions to strengthen agriculture, improve food security and support trade. That longstanding presence is what allows Winrock to deliver results at scale while advancing shared economic interests.

A recent example is the USDAโ€‘funded Thailand Regional Agriculture Innovation Network (Thai RAIN), which identified, tested and scaled agricultural innovations across major value chains including rice, cassava and fruit. Through RAIN, Winrock worked alongside Thai partners and private companies to validate, disseminate and support adoption of improved technology and practices by Thai farmers. The work helped to increase productivity, profitability, and trade opportunities in the Thai agriculture sector. By focusing on commercial viability, return on investment and clear project exit strategies, RAIN laid the groundwork for sustained growth and impact.

The projectโ€™s impact extends beyond Thailand. By improving productivity and profitability in key commodities, this work helps ensure a steady, reliable supply of market-aligned agricultural products, supports the growing demand for U.S. agricultural expertise and inputs, and creates more predictable markets for businesses โ€” advancing shared prosperity through trade. ๐ŸŒ

โšก๏ธ | Power That Lasts: Building Resilience in โ€™s Mountain Communities

In Nepalโ€™s remote mountain communities, access to reliable, affordable energy can transform lives.

For decades, Winrock has partnered with communities, entrepreneurs, financial institutions and local governments to expand clean energy solutions that create economic opportunity while strengthening resilience. From pioneering private-sector hydropower development to advancing electric cooking and other renewable energy innovations, these efforts are helping rural communities build more sustainable futures.

This story highlights a core principle of Winrockโ€™s strategic plan: resilience grows when communities have the tools, partnerships and opportunities they need to thrive in the face of economic and environmental change.

By proving and scaling practical solutions and partnering with rural communities to strengthen local systems, weโ€™re helping ensure that the benefits of clean energy reach the people who need them most.

๐ŸŒฑ : Planting a forest across generations
What does resilience look like over time? Sometimes, it starts with a single tree โ€” and a long-term commitment to see it grow.

In the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, ACR at Winrock International and its partner, GreenTrees, are helping landowners restore forests that will take decades to fully mature โ€” but deliver lasting benefits for communities, ecosystems and the climate. Because real impact doesnโ€™t happen overnight: trees spend years establishing roots before forests begin to take shape, and their greatest climate benefits come later as they grow.

This story highlights how families are investing not just in land, but in legacy โ€” restoring habitats, supporting wildlife and building resilience that spans generations.

Itโ€™s a powerful example of our strategic focus in action: partnering with rural communities to design and scale solutions that strengthen environmental systems and livelihoods over the long term.
