Preparedness takes partnership, planning, and practice.

Last week, our Department of Public Safety Emergency Management team, along with core leaders from across our organization, Infection Prevention & Control, and external partners, came together for a tabletop exercise focused on infectious disease and public health emergency preparedness.

The exercise gave us an opportunity to strengthen coordination, communication, and response strategies while identifying areas where we can continue to improve.

Preparedness is about bringing the right people to the table before an emergency happens. Every conversation, partnership, and exercise helps make our organization stronger and better prepared.

🚨 Day 1 & 2 Highlights | University of Arkansas System Public Safety Conference 🚨

It has been an honor to learn alongside law enforcement leaders and public safety professionals from across Arkansas and the University of Arkansas System. Their commitment to collaboration, innovation, and protecting our campuses continues to make a lasting impact.

Over the past two days, we’ve gained valuable insights on cybersecurity, emergency management, active shooter response, legal updates, and emerging public safety challenges all while strengthening partnerships that will help keep our campuses and communities safer.

We’re proud of our UAMS Department of Public Safety team for representing UAMS with excellence throughout the conference.

Day 2 of the University of Arkansas System Public Safety Conference was filled with exceptional learning, collaboration, and leadership!

The day kicked off with an outstanding presentation by Eric Wall, Chief Information Security Officer for the University of Arkansas System, who shared valuable insights on Cyber Security on College Campuses and the growing importance of protecting our institutions from evolving cyber threats.

The momentum continued as UAMS Police Chief Alice Fulk, alongside Corporal Jon Smith, Sergeant Mike Siller, and Officer Robert Maack, delivered an outstanding Active Shooter Response presentation, providing practical strategies and real-world experience to enhance campus preparedness and response.

Following lunch, Senior Director Wright Cookus showcased the UAMS Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and led a discussion on the National Incident Management System (NIMS), highlighting the importance of coordinated emergency management and interagency collaboration.

The afternoon featured an engaging Tabletop Exercise led by Chief Ray Ottman, followed by an informative session from Alicia Corder, Director of the Criminal Justice Institute, who shared valuable training and education resources for Arkansas’ public safety professionals.

Attendees also gained important insights during the Clery Reporting presentation led by Chief John Kidwell of the University of Arkansas at Monticello Police Department and Assistant Chief Chris Bentley of the UCA Police Department.

The conference concluded with a powerful presentation from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where Brian Cunningham, Intelligence Analyst for Domestic Terrorism, discussed Nihilistic Violent Extremism and the evolving threats facing our communities. His presentation reinforced the importance of intelligence sharing, vigilance, and strong partnerships in safeguarding our campuses.

What an incredible day of professional development and collaboration. We are proud that the UAMS Department of Public Safety continues to lead, educate, and share best practices that strengthen public safety across the University of Arkansas System.

Last week, the UAMS Department of Public Safety including Emergency Management, the Technical Security team, National Weather Service team, Distribution Center Department, and Police Department conducted a collaborative tabletop exercise focused on inclement weather preparedness and continuity operations.

The exercise created great dialogue, collaboration, and planning as teams discussed backup operational protocols and emergency coordination efforts during severe weather events. Scenarios included the impact of a tornado striking operations, potential dispatch relocation plans, and how long the Distribution Center could continue operations during an emergency event.

Great teamwork across all departments involved!
