As America approaches its 250th anniversary, we love to highlight some of the landscapes that shaped Arkansas places. Withrow Springs State Park is one of those places where history still echoes through the hills.

Tucked into the Ozark foothills near Huntsville, Withrow Springs has long been a lifeline for the region. The spring itself served early settlers as a dependable water source, helping support the growth of nearby communities that would eventually influence the development of Northwest Arkansas. The rugged terrain and flowing waters here played a quiet but essential role in how the area evolved.

Today, the park is preserving that heritage while offering a place to reflect on the people who shaped Arkansas long before it became a state.

This Memorial Day, we honor the Arkansans who served, and the stories that shaped our nation!

As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we’re highlighting historic sites across Arkansas that preserve the legacy of how Arkansas State Parks have helped form the history of our state. Today, we’re featuring Herman Davis State Park in Manila.

Herman Davis grew up hunting near Manila and went on to become a remarkable scout and sharpshooter in World War I. His bravery earned him a place on General John J. Pershing’s list of WWI’s 100 great heroic stories. Private Davis received the Distinguished Service Cross, Croix de Guerre, and Médaille Militaire from the American and French governments, honors that reflect his extraordinary courage and service.

This quiet historic site that is an Arkansas State Park preserves Davis’ final resting place and features a monument in his honor. It stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served. You’ll find it at the corner of Ark. 18B and Baltimore Street in Manila.
