Think you need a medical background to volunteer with Little Silver EMS? Gene did, too.

When Gene first became interested in EMS, his career had been in finance — not healthcare. “Two years ago, I wouldn’t have known the difference between a stair chair and a beach chair!” Gene said.

With training, mentorship, and support from fellow volunteers, Gene went from having zero medical experience to earning his EMR certification and, this summer, becoming a certified EMT. 🚑

Now, he’s using those skills to give back to the Little Silver community his family has called home for more than 25 years.

This past weekend, our joint Little Silver Fire Company and Little Silver Emergency Medical Services Water Rescue Team was dispatched to assist a driver whose vehicle became stranded in floodwaters.

In addition to this rescue, our fire and EMS crews responded to several other calls throughout the storms. A huge thank you to our water rescue team members and to all of the first responders and partner agencies who worked to keep our community safe.

Reminder: Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even shallow water can stall your engine and leave you stranded, and it's often deeper than it looks. When in doubt, find another route.

Thomas Lloyd joined Little Silver EMS as a cadet at just 14 years old.

Over the years, he has progressed from EMR to EMT to leading the squad as chief. Along the way has developed new skills, built lasting relationships, and found new ways to serve the Little Silver Community.

For Thomas, the reason he continues to volunteer is simple: being there for people when they need it most.

For Vinnie Lenza, volunteering with Little Silver EMS started with a little encouragement from his dad. It soon became much more.

From his first EMR classes to working as a career EMT while away at college, Vinnie credits Little Silver EMS with helping him gain hands-on experience, build confidence, and discover a path he’s passionate about.

And when he’s home from school, he still finds time to volunteer—including serving alongside the person who first introduced him to the squad: his dad.

When May Truxal joined Little Silver EMS, she brought years of experience as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner. But EMS gave her something new: the opportunity to serve her community in a different way.

Inspired to volunteer after 9/11, May found more than emergency care. She found teamwork, lifelong friendships, and the opportunity to mentor future EMTs.

"Being an EMT became more than just providing emergency care. It was about helping my neighbors, my community, and my family."
