The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Library will kick off its 15th annual “Summer at the Stone House” event series on June 11 with the Union Fife and Drum Corps, musicians and educators who will present a program titled “Field Music of the Civil War.”

Based in the Buffalo area, The Union Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps is an historically authentic musical group specializing in the martial field music of the Civil War. Formed in 2009 by Jim Pace (fife) and Brian Seibel (drum), they are well known amongst Civil War reenactors in the Western New York area as well as the general public with performances, parades and lecture/presentations. They have also performed for the National Park Service.

Pace is a retired music educator and an active professional musician performing on a variety of instruments with various bands and orchestras in the Buffalo area for over 40 years. He is the town historian for West Seneca. Seibel is a busy professional freelance percussionist with many decades of experience in Civil War reenacting and musical research. He is also well versed in Scotch drumming and early American folk music.

The duo will present a program of martial music of the Civil War, while explaining it’s uses and importance.

All “Summer at the Stone House” programs take place at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays, June through August. They will be held under an event tent on the museum lawn, rain or shine, and are free and open to the public. Some seating will be available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs if they wish. For those unable to attend in person, events will be livestreamed on the museum's YouTube channel. Watch them here: https://youtube.com/live/Sz-D8BV2UjA.

Note that the museum will host two programs with a focus on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The full schedule for 2026 is:
• June 11: Union Fife and Drum Corps, “Field Music of the Civil War”
• June 25: Joe Bradley, “The KA-BAR Story”
• July 9: Linda Hunter, “250 Years of Quilt Making in America”
• July 23: Allen Hopkins, “A Semiquincentennial of American Song”
• Aug. 13: Dave Ruch, “The American Songbag — Traditional American Folk Songs”
• Aug. 27: Jeanette Sheliga, “Beefing up an Ancestor’s Timeline” (genealogy)

In addition, “Family Day at the Museum” will return Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As part of New York State Tourism’s “Path Through History” weekend, the museum will be open for families to come see our exhibits. As a special attraction, the WNY Fiddle Kids will perform at noon.
