Attn Lamb County Residents we have received several reports of,

“Unpaid Tolls Text Scams”

Here are a few tips on
How to Spot, Avoid and Report these Toll Road Payment Scam Texts.

Recognizing and Avoiding Them:

Unpaid tolls text scams are a type of phishing attack where fraudsters send text messages designed to look like they are from legitimate toll collection agenciesto (such as E-ZPass or FasTrak).

The messages claim that the recipient has an outstanding toll balance and threaten late fees or even license suspension if payment is not made immediately.

The text includes a link that leads to a fake website designed to steal your personal and financial information.

Key Indicators of an Unpaid Toll Text Scam:

1. Unexpected Messages: You receive a text about unpaid tolls when you haven't recently used a toll road or aren't expecting a bill.

2. Sense of Urgency/Threats: The message pressures you to act quickly to avoid fines or penalties.

3. Suspicious Links: The text contains a link that directs you to a website that asks for personal or financial information, and the URL may look slightly off or contain misspellings.

4. Generic Greetings: The message doesn't address you by name or lacks specific details about your vehicle or travel history.

5. Requests for unusual payment methods: Scam messages may ask for payment via gift cards or wire transfers.

What to do if you receive an unpaid toll text scam:

Do NOT click on the link: Clicking on the link can expose you to malware or lead you to a fake website designed to steal your information.

Do not reply to the message: Responding confirms that your phone number is active and may lead to more scam messages.

Verify with the official source: If you're concerned, contact the toll agency directly using a phone number or website you know is legitimate (not the one provided in the text).

Report the scam:

Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM): This helps your wireless carrier identify and block similar messages.

Report to the FTC:
File a complaint at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Report to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3):
File a complaint at www.ic3.gov.

Report to your toll agency:
Inform them about the scam text to help them warn other users.

Delete the message: Once you've reported it, delete the scam text from your phone.

Important Reminders:
Legitimate toll agencies typically don't send text messages to collect payment or request personal information.

Toll notices are usually sent via mail.

Be cautious of any messages that create a sense of urgency.

Never share your personal or financial information in response to unsolicited text messages.
By being aware of these signs and following these guidelines, you can protect yourself from unpaid tolls text scams and keep your personal and financial information safe.
