You may have recently heard people mention hantaviruses in the news or on social media. If you’re not familiar, they’re a group of viruses carried by rodents that can cause severe disease in humans.

Strains differ from location to location.

In Colorado, the Sin Nombre strain of hantavirus is common and can be spread by deer mice. You cannot catch the Sin Nombre hantavirus from another person. Instead, infection happens via contact with infected rodents or their urine, droppings or saliva and can cause a range of illnesses, including severe disease and death.

Only the Andes hantavirus strain, which is native to South America, is known to spread from person-to-person. This strain was in the news because of an outbreak on a cruise ship. The Andes strain does not naturally occur in North America and has not been found in Colorado.

Birth control shouldn’t feel confusing or out of reach. Arapahoe County Public Health is partnering with FreeBC, a new online resource offering no-cost birth control for anyone 18+. The app provides education, helps you choose a method, and connects you with an online provider for mail delivery or with an ACPH clinic for an in‑person appointment. FreeBC helps remove barriers so Colorado residents can make informed decisions with confidence.

Rabies vaccines are required in Arapahoe County and can save your pet’s life. For many of us, pets are part of the family. Protect them like they are, too. Supervise pets, and do not let them sniff or eat dead wildlife. Vaccinated pets that come into contact with a rabid animal have a significantly higher chance of survival. Call 303-734-4379 to report human and pet interactions with wildlife.
