Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. In fact, one of the biggest mistakes a leader can make is believing they have to.

Good leadership starts with recognizing that you don’t have to be the smartest person in the room—you need to surround yourself with good people who bring experience, perspective, and different ways of looking at a problem.

Listen to them. Ask questions. Consider the information. Then make the decision.

And once that decision is made, own it.

Leadership means accepting responsibility for the outcome, whether the decision turns out exactly as planned or not. You don’t shift the blame to your team when things go wrong, and you don’t take all the credit when things go right.

Your people need to know that you will listen to them, trust them, make the best decision you can, and stand with them afterward.

That’s leadership—not having all the answers, but having the right people, the courage to listen, and the character to accept responsibility.

Leadership is tested when things get difficult.

I’ve spent much of my career responding to difficult situations—not studying them from a distance.

Investigations. Hostage negotiations. Critical incidents. Personnel leadership. School safety. Each experience has reinforced the same lesson: preparation matters.

You can’t wait for the crisis to begin before deciding how you’re going to lead. The decisions made during the difficult moments are often shaped by the preparation, training, relationships, and experience built long before the situation occurs.

Preparation isn’t about expecting something to go wrong. It’s about being ready when it does.

It’s also about preparing the people around you. A leader’s responsibility isn’t simply to be prepared personally—it’s to build a team that is capable, confident, and ready to respond when it matters most.

After more than four decades in leadership roles, I’ve learned that experience matters, but experience without reflection doesn’t necessarily create better leaders.

We have to learn from the difficult moments, apply those lessons, and continually prepare for the next one.

Because when the moment comes, leadership isn’t about what you intended to do.

It’s about what you are prepared to do.

There’s something rewarding about looking back at the end of a school safety duty day and knowing the job was done right.

The day may have included challenges, difficult conversations, unexpected situations, and plenty of decisions that had to be made quickly. But when the day is over, those things become secondary to one simple thought:

The students went home safe.

That is what makes this work meaningful.

School safety isn’t just about responding when something goes wrong. It’s about being present, building relationships, identifying concerns before they become problems, supporting our staff and students, and doing everything possible to create an environment where learning can happen safely.

At the end of the day, there is no better measure of success than knowing the doors closed, families were reunited, and our students made it home.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve, and I’m especially grateful for the people who show up every day to help keep our schools safe.

Protecting students. Supporting schools. Serving with purpose.

My approach to leadership is simple: Troops Eat First.

Strong organizations begin by taking care of the people doing the work. That means providing the training, resources, support and leadership they need to succeed—while maintaining clear expectations and accountability.

When leaders invest in their people, those people are better prepared to serve others.

In public safety, that ultimately means a stronger organization and a safer community.

Leadership is not about being served. It is about serving those you lead so they can better serve others.

A sheriff isn't simply the person at the top of an organizational chart. A sheriff sets the standard for the entire organization.

Leadership means accepting responsibility, making difficult decisions, listening to the people doing the work, and taking care of those who serve.

After more than 35 years in law enforcement and school safety, I believe the strongest organizations are built through collaboration, accountability and trust.

Lead with people. Not over them.

Back to School Means Back to Preparedness

After more than 35 years in law enforcement and school safety, I’ve learned an important lesson:

Critical incident preparedness cannot begin when the crisis begins.

Law enforcement officers and school safety staff need to train together, communicate together, and understand each other’s roles before seconds matter.

I recently revisited an article I wrote for FBI-LEEDA, “The Necessity to Cross Train Officers with School Safety Staff for Critical Incident Response.”

With schools back in session, I believe the message is more important than ever.

The question we should all be asking is:

If something happens tomorrow, are the people responsible for responding truly prepared to work together?

Preparation isn't about expecting the worst.

It's about being ready for it.

Leadership. Experience. Accountability.

When choosing a sheriff, don't just look at the badge or the title. Look at the leader.

Experience matters—but so does what you have done with that experience.

Ask the important questions:

Who develops people? Who builds trust? Who sets high standards? Who accepts accountability? Who is prepared to lead the organization into the future?

For me, leadership has always been about more than management.

It's about people, mission, accountability and service.

IT IS About Leadership…Not Just Management.
