If you are installing a new smoke alarm or combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, take a moment to make sure it is activated.

Many newer 10 year sealed battery alarms are shipped with a battery activation tab or require an activation step before they will operate. Some brands activate when the alarm is locked onto the mounting bracket, while others require the battery to be activated first.

On the alarm shown below, the yellow safety tag must be removed before the alarm can be activated. If this step is missed, the alarm is not on and will not sound in the event of an emergency.

This was a close call for one family who believed their new smoke alarms were installed and protecting them. Fortunately, the issue was discovered before an emergency occurred, but the alarms had never actually been activated.

This is an easy step to overlook. The best way to know your alarm is working is to press and hold the TEST button until the alarm sounds. Never assume a newly installed alarm is operating correctly without testing it.

If you've noticed hazy skies or the sun looking more orange than usual, you're not imagining it.

Littleton is fortunate to typically enjoy Good air quality, thanks to our suburban setting, abundant trees, and relatively low levels of industrial pollution. On most days, our Air Quality Index (AQI) falls within the Good (Green) range, making it safe for everyone to enjoy outdoor activities.

So why is the air quality worse today?

The elevated AQI we're seeing isn't being caused by local pollution. Instead, smoke from large wildfires burning in Canada is being carried hundreds of miles into New England by upper-level winds. This smoke contains tiny particles known as PM2.5, which can affect air quality even though the fires are far away. Forecasters expect periods of hazy skies and reduced air quality across Massachusetts as long as the smoke remains over the region.

When air quality reaches the moderate or unhealthy range:
🍃 Consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity, especially if you have asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions.
👶 Young children and older adults should take extra precautions.
🏃 If you're exercising outdoors, pay attention to how you feel and consider moving activities indoors if smoke becomes more noticeable.

Water restrictions are in place. Nonessential outdoor watering is not permitted. The Northeast Region of Massachusetts is experiencing a Level 3 Critical Drought.

Per MassDEP requirements, all nonessential outdoor water uses are prohibited, including:
- Irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems.
- Washing of vehicles, except in a commercial car wash or as necessary for operator safety.
- Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks, except as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement.
- Filling swimming pools.

What outdoor watering is allowed? The watering of vegetable gardens.

Beat The Heat, Littleton!
The National Weather Service in Boston issued an Extreme Heat Warning that is in effect from Wednesday at 10 a.m. to Saturday at 8 p.m. The agency’s forecast says high heat and humidity will result in heat index values of 98 to 112 degrees, which could cause a dangerous increase in heat-related illnesses.

With high temperatures expected tomorrow through Saturday, the Town of Littleton encourages everyone to take steps to stay safe and cool.
Residents seeking relief from the heat are welcome to utilize the following air-conditioned Town facilities during their normal operating hours:

Littleton Public Library
Thursday, July 2: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Friday, July 3: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Center on Shattuck Street - EHS
Thursday, July 2: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Please remember to:
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
Check on your neighbors, especially older adults, individuals with medical conditions, and anyone who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.

It’s a holiday weekend and the only thing smoking should be the BBQ (in a good way). 🍔🌭
With temperatures on the rise, take the heat seriously. Stay hydrated, cool down, and know the signs of heat exhaustion.

Keep an eye on children, older adults, and pets, and don’t hesitate to call 911 if someone is showing signs of heat stroke.

This weekend kicks off 4th of July celebrations and fireworks shows.
Each year, fireworks-related incidents result in preventable fires and injuries.

The Littleton Fire Department would like to remind residents that all consumer fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in Massachusetts.

Celebrate safely this holiday season and leave the fireworks to the professionals.

With springtime here and more people getting outside, we’re asking residents to take a look at their house numbers.

Take a look from the street can you clearly see your house number? If your house number is hidden, faded, or missing, it can impact our response.

✔ Large, easy-to-read numbers
✔ High-contrast numbers (dark on light works best—black on white trim is ideal)
✔ Visible from the road in both directions. If you live at an intersection, consider adding the street name to help avoid confusion.
✔ Reflective or illuminated numbers for nighttime and bad weather
✔ Mark your driveway if your home sits back or is not visible from the road. A sign at the end of the driveway with your number (and street name) can help
✔ Don’t rely only on your mailbox. Mailboxes may be across the street or grouped together, which can be confusing

Take a moment to check your home. If your house number is hard to see, a simple fix can make a big difference.
