This week’s rain totaled 1.05 inches in Littleton, which is a great start to the month. The 30-year historical average for August is just under four inches of rain.

In July, we saw 4.51 inches of rain, the first month this year that has met or exceeded the 30-year average. We post a precipitation report monthly at https://www.lelwd.com/conservation-and-environmental-programs/

Whether this rainfall is enough to ease drought restrictions remains to be seen. State officials will review data later this month, and we’ll let you know if the restrictions ease. For now, all nonessential outdoor watering is prohibited, including watering lawns and washing cars. Watering vegetable gardens is OK. Get more info at lelwd.com.

Nikola Tesla was born on this day in 1856. Tesla is most famous for discovering and developing the alternating current (AC) electrical system—the standard method of power generation and distribution used worldwide today.

“[A]t the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, … Tesla’s system lit the fairgrounds in a blaze of electric light. The spectacle convinced the public, secured the future of AC, and laid the foundation for the electrical grid that still powers our lives,” according to the Tesla Science Center.

We sent a line crew to assist Marblehead Municipal Light Department to restore power yesterday after high loads stressed the town's system. We joined colleauges from Braintree Electric Light Department, Groveland Municipal Light Department, and Kennebunk Light & Power District in providing mutual aid to our fellow provider. It's a reminder to us all to conserve power during the heat wave to reduce the demand on the electrical system. That means turning off unusued lights and appliances, waiting to do laundry and dishes until after 8 p.m., and turning up the AC a few degrees, especially if you are going out. Thank you for helping us conserve energy.
