⏰In this Medicare Minute, I explain the concept of grocery money related to Medicare 🛒
While some Advantage Plans previously offered grocery money for those with certain chronic conditions, recent changes in laws have made it more difficult to access these benefits. Currently, grocery money is primarily available for individuals on Medicaid with low income and chronic conditions. I personally benefited from this on my Advantage Plan for two years, but now most plans do not provide this benefit. I encourage you to explore other valuable benefits available through Advantage Plans. As an experienced Medicare Broker, I can help you!

⏰ In this Medicare Minute, I discuss the importance of being aware of Medicare penalties, which can last a lifetime. If you are late enrolling in Part B and have no other employer coverage for a whole year, you will incur penalties that continue indefinitely. Currently, the monthly premium for Part B is $202.90 in 2026, and I strongly advise against going without it. Additionally, Part D has a late penalty that begins accruing after 65 days without coverage. While there have been rumors of changes to limit these penalties, nothing has been confirmed yet, so it's crucial to stay informed.🤓

Where You Get Your Meds Matters
💊Your prescription drug costs under Medicare depend on how and where you receive your medications.
If you pick up your prescriptions at a retail pharmacy—or have them delivered through a mail-order service📫—your medications are covered under your Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). These plans have a list of covered drugs (called a formulary) and use tiers to determine your cost. You’ll typically pay a copay or coinsurance based on the drug tier, and your costs may change as you move through different coverage phases during the year.
If you receive medications in a doctor’s office, clinic, or outpatient setting (like injections, infusions, or certain specialty drugs), those are usually covered under the medical side of Medicare (Part B or your Medicare Advantage plan). Instead of a standard drug copay, you’ll generally pay a percentage of the cost (often around 20% under Original Medicare), unless you have supplemental coverage or an Advantage plan with set copays.
Bottom line: The same medication can cost very different amounts depending on where you receive it—so it’s always worth asking ahead of time.

Hi, I'm Trinity Clancy, and in this Medicare Minute, I discuss why Medicare can be so complicated. Since its inception in 1965, Medicare has undergone numerous changes due to legislative decisions, including recent reforms like the Inflation Reduction Act, which capped prescription costs for Medicare recipients. With all these changes, navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming, and that's why I strongly recommend finding a Medicare broker to help you sort through the complexities and find the best plan for your needs. Remember, you only need to focus on what applies to you, not the noise around Medicaid or other unrelated topics. If you're feeling lost, reach out to a broker- like me- for guidance!

🙋🏼‍♀️A common question I am asked is does Medicare cover everything? It's crucial to understand that Medicare does not cover ❌: cosmetic procedures, experimental treatments, routine dental care, vision care, or hearing aids.
Many people mistakenly assume these services are included, but they often require additional coverage. As a Medicare broker, I can help you navigate these options without any cost to you, as I receive commissions from insurance companies. I encourage you to reach out if you need assistance in ensuring you have the coverage you need.

✍🏼Signing up for Medicare starts with Social Security
The first step to getting on Medicare is enrolling in Parts A and B through the Social Security Administration.
Social Security prefers that you apply online at ssa.gov (http://ssa.gov/), which is usually the fastest and easiest way to enroll.
Here’s an important point:
❌You do NOT have to start your Social Security retirement benefits to enroll in Medicare. Many people choose to delay Social Security until their full retirement age—or even age 70—to maximize their benefit.
Even though both processes go through Social Security, they are separate decisions:
• Medicare = your health coverage
• Social Security = your monthly retirement income
Once you receive your Medicare card (with your Medicare ID number), you can then choose the type of coverage that fits you best—such as a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Supplement with a Part D drug plan. That’s where a broker like me can be a huge help!

04/01/2026

⏰In this Medicare Minute, I clarify that while most people must be 65 to start Medicare, there are exceptions. If you are on Social Security disability for two years, you can qualify for Medicare even if you are younger, sometimes in your 30s. I have clients who are under 65 and on Medicare due to this rule. If you have questions about Medicare, I encourage you to reach out to me so I can help you navigate the process and find the best plan for your needs.

7 Ways a Medicare Broker Can Help You Transition to Medicare

1. Explaining Your Options Without the Overwhelm Medicare comes with a lot of moving parts — Parts A, B, C, D, Supplements, IRMAA, enrollment windows — and most people have never had to think about any of it before. A good broker sits down with you and explains everything in plain language, at your pace, with no jargon and no pressure. By the time you leave that first conversation, you should feel informed, not more confused.

2. Making Sure You Enroll at the Right Time Missing your Medicare enrollment window can result in lifetime penalties on your Part B premium and gaps in coverage that are very hard to undo. A broker knows the rules cold — including the special rules for people still on employer coverage — and will make sure you enroll at exactly the right time for your situation.

3. Helping You Choose Between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage This is the most important decision you'll make, and it's not one-size-fits-all. A broker takes the time to understand your health needs, your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget — and then walks you through both options honestly, including the trade-offs, so you can make the decision that's right for you.

4. Shopping and Comparing Plans So You Don't Have To An independent broker works with multiple insurance companies, which means they can compare dozens of plans side by side on your behalf. They know which carriers have the strongest networks, the best customer service, and the most competitive pricing in your area — so you get the best plan available, not just the one that happened to call you.

5. Coordinating the Details of Your Enrollment Transitioning to Medicare involves more than just picking a plan. There's paperwork, timing, making sure your current coverage ends properly so there's no gap or overlap, verifying that your doctors and medications are covered, and ensuring your Part B premium is set up correctly. A broker guides you through every step so nothing falls through the cracks.

6. Being There When Problems Come Up Claims get denied. Bills arrive that don't look right. A doctor's office says they don't accept your plan. These things happen, and when they do, having a broker in your corner makes all the difference. A good broker advocates for you, helps you understand your rights, and works to get issues resolved — often saving clients significant time, stress, and money.

7. Reviewing Your Coverage Every Year Medicare plans change annually — premiums go up, drug formularies shift, networks change, and new plans enter the market. A broker reaches out before Open Enrollment every year to review your current plan and make sure it still makes sense for you. If something better is available, they'll tell you. If you're in the right plan, they'll confirm that too. You're never left on your own to figure it out.

🏥I am a licensed Medicare Broker and would be delighted to help you with the ins and outs of Medicare.
