This year, members of the Suwannee County Sheriff’s as well as other First Responders proudly participated in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics joining thousands of officers across the nation as “Guardians of the Flame.”

The Torch Run is more than just a run. It is a powerful movement where law enforcement officers carry the “Flame of Hope” through our communities, raising awareness and funds for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Every mile ran represents our commitment to inclusion, respect, and opportunity for all. It is an honor to stand beside these incredible athletes and support a program that continues to change lives through sports, confidence, and community.

We are proud to serve, proud to support, and proud to carry the flame.

** Autism Awareness Month **

** National Child Abuse Prevention Month **

April is Autism Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month. You may see our Deputies wearing blue badges throughout the month to show support and raise awareness.

The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office is committed to serving all members of our community with understanding, patience, and respect. We recognize that every interaction matters, especially when working with our youth and individuals with autism and their families.

SCSO offers programs such as Project Lifesaver, which helps locate individuals who may wander, and our “Occupant with Autism” vehicle decal program, which assists first responders in recognizing and responding appropriately during traffic stops or emergencies.

These resources are designed to enhance safety, improve communication, and provide peace of mind to families in our community. If you or someone you know could benefit from these programs, please contact the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office at (386)362-2222.

Together, we can build a safer and more understanding community for everyone.

Last month, Chief Deputy Buddy Williams and Captain Shawn Larney were having lunch at the Brown Lantern when they had the opportunity to meet several retired Georgia State Patrol Troopers enjoying fellowship and camaraderie. What began as a chance encounter turned into a simple act of kindness in appreciation for their years of service.

Today, that gesture came full circle.

Lt. Michael Burns, Lt. Jeff Culpepper, TFC Lee Fulghum, and SFC Dustin Rozier presented Chief Deputy Williams and Captain Larney with certificates from Lt. Colonel William “Billy” Hitchens, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety and Colonel of the Georgia State Patrol, naming them Honorary Georgia State Troopers.

The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office is honored by this recognition and grateful for the continued fellowship shared within the law enforcement community.

We would also like to recognize the retired Georgia State Patrol Troopers present during the original encounter, who made this recognition possible: Retired Major Jim Prine, Retired Captain Chris Prine (former Lowndes County Sheriff), Retired Master Trooper Dewayne Dickerson, and Retired Master Trooper and current Tift County, GA Sheriff Gene Scarbrough.

Although we serve in different states and agencies, the law enforcement profession remains one family.

This week, the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office proudly partnered with the Suwannee County Fair Board to help support a safe, fun, and successful 2026 Suwannee County Fair for families across our community.

On Saturday night (03/28/26), SCSO staff joined the Suwannee County Fair Board in shucking and serving up some delicious street-style corn. Throughout the week, local organizations volunteered their time to help with the corn boil, one of the fair’s most loved traditions. From the youth livestock show and sale to the midway rides, local vendors, and daily activities, this year’s fair brought smiles and great memories to so many families.

Sheriff Sam St. John would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all SCSO staff, including our civilian employees, dispatchers, corrections staff, and deputies, for their continued support both in front of and behind the scenes each year. Your dedication helps make this event safe and enjoyable for everyone.

We also want to thank the Suwannee County Fair Board for the opportunity to be a part of such a special community tradition. We are grateful to work alongside you and be part of something that brings so much joy to our community year after year.

Today we had the honor of celebrating an incredible milestone as Sarah Johnson concludes her 30 year career with the Sheriff’s Office.

For three decades, Sarah has served our community with professionalism, and heart. Her commitment to this agency and the people she served has left a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.

While she will be greatly missed by her Sheriff’s Office family, we are excited for her as she begins this well deserved new chapter of retirement. We hope she enjoys every moment with her family and especially the time spent with her grandchildren.

Thank you, Sarah, for 30 years of service, sacrifice, and commitment. Your legacy here will continue to inspire us.

Congratulations and best wishes in your retirement.

Sometimes it’s the small moments that remind us why we do what we do.

On March 24, 2026, Deputy Figueroa responded to a call in the 15300 block of 68th Street about a dog trapped in a fence. When he arrived, he found the dog hanging and unable to free itself, its leg caught in both field fencing and barbed wire.

With the help of a thoughtful citizen who provided a pair of pliers, Deputy Figueroa and Animal Control Officer Kyndal Howard were able to quickly and safely cut the fence and free the dog.

After being released, the dog was examined and, thankfully, had only minor injuries with little to no swelling. A follow-up check the next day confirmed the dog was doing well with no further issues.

At this time, the dog’s owners have not been identified, but we’re grateful for a positive outcome and the teamwork that made it possible.

Moments like this may not make headlines, but they matter.

Help us congratulate SCSO Dispatcher Katie Bledsoe on being recognized with the Sunshine Dispatcher Award from Gold Line Support.

This national recognition highlights the incredible work of telecommunicators who provide calm in chaos, strength in uncertainty, and life-saving support when it matters most. Dispatcher Bledsoe represents the very best of what this profession stands for.

While much of their work happens behind the scenes, dispatchers are often the first voice people hear during their worst moments. Katie’s professionalism, compassion, and dedication make a real difference for both our community and the deputies and first responders she supports every day.

We are proud to have Dispatcher Bledsoe as part of our team and grateful for the impact she continues to make across Suwannee County.

Congratulations, Katie, and thank you for your service.

Today, the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office was excited to spend the day with Suwannee Springcrest Elementary School to provide students with an up-close look at our K-9 Unit in action.

K-9s Thor and Kano, alongside their handlers, Deputies Stout and Dalton, demonstrated their advanced training, discipline, and ability to detect illegal narcotics and apprehended violent suspects and fleeing suspects. The students had a great time asking questions, learning about law enforcement, and meeting our K-9 partners firsthand.

We appreciate the opportunity to engage with our community’s youth and share the important role our K-9 teams play in keeping Suwannee County safe.
