Do you own an Air BNB or VRBO?

Do you rent any accommodation for 6 months or less?

If so, did you know that you are required to pay a 7% Sales and Use Tax to the Department of Revenue AND a 3% Tourist Development Tax to the Suwannee County Tax Collector?

Per Florida Statues, Chapter 212 any accommodation rented for 6 months or less is considered a “transient rental” and will incur the 7% Sales and Use Tax AND per Suwannee County Code, Chapter 10, a 3% Tourist Development Tax. This is a total of 10% tax to be collected.

If you rent for 6 months or less, you are required to register with the Florida Department of Revenue AND with the Suwannee County Tax Collector’s office. You will then receive the information needed to collect and remit the appropriate taxes and the information needed to keep appropriate and accurate records for any audits that may be required in the future.

The State of Florida also mandates that a written lease agreement MUST be entered into between the property owner and the renter, and that the lease agreement MUST specify the exact time frame covered by the lease. If the agreement is set for 6 months AND a day or longer, the taxes are not incurred.

Please note: The 3% Tourist Development Tax from Air BNB’s and VRBO’s is paid directly to the Suwannee County Tax Collector’s Office.
Failure to register your rental and pay the required Tourist Development Tax will result in fines and penalties.
