VFW Post 7265 Livermore, California Meetings are held at 7PM on the 1st and 3rd Mondays each month. Most members begin to gather just after 6PM to socialize. 5th Mondays are open socials.

Protecting veterans who already have ratings does not solve the problem.

There will always be another veteran filing a first claim tomorrow, next year, or ten years from now.

A system that protects only those who got there first is not good enough.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

You've probably heard the number "22 a day." It came from a 2012 VA study and became the number that launched a movement — the 22 push-ups, the 22 flags on the National Mall, a generation of veterans who decided silence wasn't an option anymore.

The number has changed since then. The VA's most recent report puts the average at 17.5 veteran su***des per day in 2023. Progress, but not victory.

Su***de was the 12th leading cause of death for veterans in 2023, and the second-leading cause of death for veterans under 45. And 61% of veterans who died by su***de in 2023 had no VA health care contact in their final year.

That last stat matters. It means the person lost isn't always the one already in the system with care. it's often the guy who seems fine, the one who stopped showing up, the one nobody thought to call.

🎖️ September 2: V-J Day — The Formal End of World War II

Japan's surrender actually came in two moments. On August 14, 1945, Japan accepted the terms of surrender, and President Truman announced it to the nation that evening.

But the war wasn't officially over until the formal signing of the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2: the date recognized as the official V-J Day in the United States.

At 9:02 a.m. that morning, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu signed the Instrument of Surrender on behalf of the Japanese government, followed by General Yoshijiro Umezu representing the Imperial Japanese military. General Douglas MacArthur opened the ceremony with a brief speech calling for justice, tolerance, and rebuilding. In just 23 minutes, the deadliest conflict in human history came to a close.

MacArthur closed the proceedings with words that still echo: "Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. A great victory has been won."

Today we remember the Veterans of the War in the Pacific. Their sacrifice bought the peace that followed.

📋 Digging Into the History: Why Livermore's Closure Was Recommended

A few folks have asked where the original 2004 decision to close the Livermore VA campus actually came from.

In 2004, an independent 16-member panel called the CARES Commission (Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services) reviewed VA facilities nationwide and recommended shifting Livermore's inpatient beds to Palo Alto and moving outpatient care to community clinics. The Secretary of the VA accepted that recommendation in May 2004 (over 20 years ago).

The original report itself is no longer hosted online (VA's old CARES Commission website is defunct). Still, the record lives on through the Senate hearing where the Commission presented it directly to Congress. In June 1942, then Major General George S. Patton, Jr., joined Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3699. The General was the Commanding General of Camp Young, then located near the current General Patton Memorial Museum at Chiriaco which is in the Coachella Valley area of California. It has been said that General Patton visited the VFW Post Hall in Coachella several times. The General remained a Post member to his death
