Planning in the works to host Dr. Joyce Conroy - Town of Rockland historian - to talk about the recently discovered tanned hides found during the renovation of the Beaverkill Covered Bridge! Stay tuned for a date and time!

I have learned that the first tannery on the Beaverkill site was run by a man named Waterbury. He lived there around 1830ish. The tanneries supported a whole host of folks, i.e., blacksmiths, bark peelers, loggers, boarding home operators, cooks, schools, and finally a church. The map below is from 1830...it shows the old Waterbury place, and now the Babcock tannery. The course of the river has been changed because there's now a dam. The dotted lines show the original bed.

We asked "Why did you visit the library?"

Here are some patron responses:

10 year old: "I don't have a computer at home."
8 year old: "For Lego Night!"
Senior Citizen: "It's my access to the outside world."
Adult: "I need the internet for my job search.
Preschooler: "To see my friends at story hour."
Adult: "There is no internet where I live."
Senior Citizen: "My granddaughter is visiting and I need books for her."

These handful of responses are reflective of how much of a community center the library has become.
