Walker High Graduate Named National Merit Scholar

LIVINGSTON, La. – Walker High School 2026 Graduate Collin Sprouse has been named a 2026 National Merit Scholar, an elite honor bestowed this year on only 6,700 students across the nation.

Sprouse received word last fall that he had been named one of 16,000 semifinalists in the 71st Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

“A much-earned congratulations goes out to Collin, his parents and his academic counseling team at Walker High School for staying the course for this award. This is quite an honor to be celebrated,” Superintendent Jody Purvis said.

Other accolades that Sprouse enjoyed his senior year include being named the Walker High School Student of the Year, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, a member of WAFB’s Best of Class, captain of the Walker High Boys Soccer Team and finalist for the Louisiana Soccer Association’s 2026 Young Referee of the Year.

Sprouse said he aspires to study biology and nursing in college to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). He said he gained a passion for working in healthcare after founding KidCreations, a volunteer service organization that assembles and delivers activity bags to pediatric patients.

Sprouse graduated with a 4.2 GPA and a composite score of 35 on the ACT. He accumulated 58 college credit hours through Walker High School’s dual enrolment and AP courses, giving him a significant head start on his college studies.

The National Merit program is highly competitive, beginning with more than 1.3 million high school juniors nationwide. This year’s scholars must have taken the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, included the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

The field was narrowed to the top 1% from each state, resulting in approximately 16,000 semifinalists. From there, 15,000 finalists were chosen with less than half ultimately being named National Merit Scholar.

To become a finalist, the semifinalist and a high school official had to submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provided information about the qualifying student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. The student had to maintain an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

📚 Getting Ready to Welcome Summer School Students! ☀️

This week, our Curriculum Department had the pleasure of hosting Summer School ELA Training for the dedicated teachers who will be supporting student learning in the weeks ahead. While many are enjoying a well-deserved summer break, these educators chose to spend part of their summer preparing to make a difference for our students.

We are incredibly grateful to the teachers who attended the training and to those who have offered their time and talents to teach summer school. Their commitment to student success is truly appreciated.

A special thank you to our Curriculum Department team for organizing and facilitating this important professional learning opportunity. Their hard work helps ensure that both teachers and students are set up for success.

Summer School begins Monday, June 15, and we are excited to welcome students back for a season of learning and growth!

It may be summer, but Central Office hasn't slowed down! Our Instructional Technology team has been doing anything but sitting still!

Throughout June, this dedicated group planned and delivered a series of engaging, innovative professional learning opportunities designed to help teachers level up their instructional practices and technology skills. From AI prompting and NotebookLM to virtual field trips, microlearning strategies, lesson pacing, coding with Canva and Gemini, and interactive classroom technology training, our team provided meaningful learning experiences that teachers can immediately bring back to their classrooms.

Behind every professional development session are hours of planning, designing resources, coordinating logistics, learning new tools, and supporting educators. Their commitment ensures that our teachers are equipped with the skills and confidence needed to create engaging learning experiences for students.

Thank you to our Instructional Technology Department for spending your summer investing in the success of our teachers and students. Your hard work often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt in classrooms across the district every day.

A special shoutout goes to the teachers and staff members who invested part of their summer in professional growth by attending these sessions. Your willingness to learn new strategies, explore emerging technologies, and strengthen your instructional practices demonstrates a commitment to excellence that directly benefits our students.
