There is a heat advisory today, June 10, noon-8 p.m. Please take precautions.

The City of Livonia hosts a cooling center at the Kirksey Recreation Center for residents looking for refuge from the heat. Residents may use the facility as a cooling center during its operating hours. The Rec hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays; 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Rec has facilities that can provide short-term refuge for those who may need it. There are also WiFi access and televisions available, along with plugs for cell phone chargers.

All recreation areas of the facility will be off-limits for emergency shelter users, including the pools, gymnasiums, climbing wall and fitness hub. Those who need shelter will also be asked to agree to a code of conduct while using the site.
We encourage everyone to use caution when we experience high temperatures.

Below are some tips to stay safe:
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Stay out of direct sunlight, if possible. Bring pets indoors and check on others.
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Don’t leave people or pets in your car.
- Avoid high-energy activity or outdoor work during midday heat, if possible.
- Check on family, seniors and neighbors.
- Know the signs of heat sickness and watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
