Spots are filling quickly for the annual Senior Fall Festival on Friday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stymelski Veteran’s Park in Livonia. This year’s End of the Summer Luau will include refreshments, entertainment, bingo, games, prizes, a Lee’s Chicken boxed lunch, ice cream, and a classic car display for seniors ages 55+. If weather becomes an issue, the event will move indoors to the Livonia Senior Wellness Center and the car show will be canceled. Registration opens for residents on Wednesday, August 5 at 9 a.m., with non-resident registration beginning at 11 a.m., available online at LivoniaParks.org or in person. Those interested in showcasing a classic car can contact Carrie Jo at (734) 466‑2557. The cost is $8 for Livonia residents and $10 for non-residents; grandchildren are not permitted at this event.

Join us 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, for a captivating journey through two centuries of local history as Tyler Moll, director of the Wayne Historical Museum, brings the story of the City of Wayne to life. From its 1824 beginnings to the vibrant community it is today, we’ll learn about the city’s rich automotive legacy, memorable social moments, and surprising connections to influential historical figures. This free program takes place at the Alexander Blue House, with no registration required.

Join us from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, for the Fall Flea Market. With more than 160 vendors offering vintage and unique finds, there’s plenty to explore. Admission is $3 for those 12 and older; children 11 and younger are free. Please bring cash. No ATM is available.

Free parking is offered at the Special Events lot on Newburgh Road and the Farm Complex lot on Victor Parkway, both just south of Eight Mile Road. Vendor spots are sold out, and any outreach from unofficial channels is a scam. Vendor spots are non-transferable. Please report suspicious activity you see on our socials.

We're almost there!

The Kirksey Recreation Center remains closed through tomorrow, Aug. 28 for its annual deep cleaning and maintenance. This five-day shutdown, typically held just before Labor Day, has been part of our operations since 2003. Although major construction paused the closures in 2024 and 2025, the maintenance week has now resumed.

Management continues to refine the process each year, and the five‑day shutdown remains the most efficient way to keep the facility in excellent condition.

Join us tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. for Livonia’s book club discussion of Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS A NEW ENTRANCE FOR THIS MONTH’S MEETING. Registrants should enter through the Livonia Senior Wellness Center, not the Kirksey Recreation Center. The Bentley Room is located inside the Senior Wellness Center.

Middlesex, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, follows three generations of a Greek American family and explores identity, family, immigration and the forces that shape who we become.

Books are available through Livonia Public Libraries.

The Kirksey Recreation Center will be closed Aug. 24-28.

The Rec closes each year for deep cleaning and maintenance, traditionally scheduled just before Labor Day. Although major construction halted shutdowns in 2024 and 2025, this annual maintenance week has been part of operations since 2003. During the closure, members may still use the Clements Circle Splash Park.

This year’s projects include
- Lobby ceiling painting
- High dusting and carpet cleaning
- Re‑grouting locker room showers
- And more!

Management continues to refine the process, and the five‑day shutdown remains the most efficient way to keep the facility in top condition.
