As part of our continued commitment to community engagement, the Livonia Police Department recently hosted a Back-to-School Backpack Drive, providing students in kindergarten through 5th grade at Livonia Public Schools and Clarenceville Public Schools with backpacks and school supplies to start the new school year off right!

Through our Community Engagement Grant, we purchased 1,000 backpacks and thousands of school supplies to distribute to local students.

But we couldn't have done it alone! We were proud to partner with local high school students, including members of the Churchill Cheer, Wrestling, Basketball, and Hockey teams, who helped us stuff all 1,000 backpacks with school supplies. Our officers delivered the backpacks to students throughout both school districts.

We are incredibly grateful to all of the students who volunteered their time and to everyone who helped make this project possible. This is exactly what community engagement is all about…working together to support the students and families in our community.

This grant has allowed us to continually connect and bond with the community we are honored to serve.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Back-to-School Backpack Drive a success!

*** MEDIA RELEASE ***

Over the past couple of weeks, the Livonia community has experienced a series of several vehicle break-ins within the City. Through the diligent efforts of the Livonia Police Department, Investigators have identified and apprehended a suspect believed to be responsible for these crimes.

During the course of the investigation, Livonia Police Field Evidence Technicians processed evidence (latent fingerprints) from several vehicle break-in scenes. Their thorough work led our Investigators to identify Richard Johnson, a 32-year-old male Detroit resident believed to be connected to the incidents. Investigators were able to determined that Johnson was not only responsible for multiple vehicle break-ins in Livonia, but was also connected to several similar incidents in surrounding communities.

On Friday, August 14, 2026, as a result of the ongoing investigation, Johnson was located and arrested by Livonia Police Department investigators while attempting to break into vehicles. Johnson attempted to flee the area in his vehicle but was stopped by Livonia Officers utilizing the Grappler device. He was subsequently taken into custody without incident.

Johnson has been formally charged with one count of felony larceny from a motor vehicle, one count of felony larceny, six counts of misdemeanor larceny, and habitual offender.

On Monday August 17, Johnson was arraigned at the 16th District Court of Livonia by Magistrate Roger Spence, who set a 50,000 cash bond. A Probable Cause Conference has been scheduled for August 27, 2026 at the 16th District Court of Livonia.

The Livonia Police Department would like to recognize the outstanding work and dedication of our Field Evidence Technicians, Investigators, and other members of the department whose dedication and investigative efforts contributed to the successful resolution of these cases.

If you or someone you know was the victim of a vehicle break-in within the past several weeks and the incident has not yet been reported, we encourage you to contact the Livonia Police Department and make a report.

🍦 Introducing Our New Community Ice Cream Trailer! 🍦

Thanks to a Community Engagement Grant, the Livonia Police Department is excited to introduce our new community ice cream trailer! Both the trailer and the ice cream we serve were purchased entirely through grant funding that was awarded specifically to support community engagement initiatives. That means every ice cream we hand out is provided completely FREE to our community.

This new addition gives us another fun, family-friendly way to connect with the people we serve. Whether it's handing out a free ice cream to a child, chatting with parents, or simply sharing a conversation with residents of all ages, our goal is to create positive interactions and build stronger relationships throughout our community.

This week, we had the opportunity to take the trailer out for the very first time, and it was a great success! We spent the day visiting with residents, meeting families, and handing out free ice cream. More importantly, we had countless positive conversations, answered questions, and built new relationships with members of our community. Seeing so many smiles and hearing the positive feedback reminded us that some of the best opportunities to connect happen in simple, informal settings.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and to those who have already shared photos and kind words on social media. We look forward to bringing the trailer to neighborhood parks, community events, and gatherings throughout Livonia this summer and for years to come. We hope to see you at our next stop!🍦🚓
