On Sunday, March 29, 2026, the flag flew for the first time this season—and right in our backyard. Quite literally.
On Silverton Mountain, smoke was spotted just before 5:00 PM by one of our company members, who quickly notified the Department.
After triangulating the approximate location, Chief 3 (Pothering) requested a company-level brush response through Schuylkill County Communications.
Upon arrival, command was transferred to Warden Kennedy. Crews encountered approximately two acres actively burning, with fire pushing on all flanks. A former mining pit was also heavily involved, containing several hundred discarded vehicle tires.
Within 20 minutes, forward progression of the wildfire was stopped and crews transitioned to mop-up operations, tackling several large brush piles. Attention then shifted to the tire pit.
With the assistance of heavy equipment provided by the landowner, crews deployed nearly 8,000 gallons of water along with multiple pails of firefighting foam to bring the pit fire under control.
Strong, coordinated work by all involved to contain a challenging and potentially long-duration incident early in the season.
Special thanks to Minersville Police Department for the es**rt of the heavy equipment to the scene.
Additional thanks to our mutual aid partners and neighboring crews for their assistance. Wildland firefighting is a very specialized discipline and sometimes the closest company doesn’t always have the appropriate resource for the assignment.
Thanks to Pine Grove North End Fire (Warden Readinger) St Clair Fire Department (Warden Johns) Pottsville Fire Department - American Hose and Ryan Township Fire Company for their assistance with their Heavy Brush units. Thanks also to our partners at Minersville EMS and the Schuylkill County Communications Center.
