Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary The Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary is a private wildlife Sanctuary located south of Loami, Illinois. It is open to the public from sunrise to sunset each day.

Welcome to the Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary established in 1995 and recently opened to the public in 2012. There is no cost to visit this site. This is a private wildlife sanctuary, established exclusively for protection of wildlife and to educate the public. Please note the rules for the site: we are open from dawn to dusk. Only foot traffic is allowed. No hunting or collecting of any kind without Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary approval. No alcohol allowed on the premises.

Spend an afternoon in the prairie at the Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary Open House from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026. There will be walking tours leaving from the nature center every hour starting at 1 p.m. There will be mule-drawn wagon tours and a bird-banding demonstration. Come out and see what's new in the sanctuary this year.

A new shrub planting is underway at the south end of the Sanctuary in the area between the bridges. Vernon LaGesse is propagating from cuttings of existing plants. The cut stakes were soaked in water for a time to develop roots prior to transplanting. New plants are fenced with wire to protect them from deer. We are looking forward to watching the area mature and provide habitat for pollinators and birds.
