LHU Recreation Management Department and Curricular Tracks Proposed for Elimination in the PASSHE Integration
Dear LHU Recreation Management Alumni – As many of you may have read, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is in the process of restructuring and integrating PASSHE Universities. The Northeastern Integration Plan includes Lock Haven, Mansfield, and Bloomsburg. As part of the integration process, the LHU Recreation Management Department and tracks of study were eliminated from the curricular offerings proposed in the Northeastern Integration Program Array proposed by the Chancellor and Provosts.
It is important to note that we have been ensured that students currently in the department will be able to complete the degree in which they are registered.
As faculty, current and former, we are asking for your support, advocacy, and expertise to help us continue to offer our curriculum. Many of you have excelled in your professional endeavors. We know that many of you continue to work in the field as service providers, administrators, and entrepreneurs. We also know that many of you used the skills, knowledge, and connections created during your time in the Recreation Management Department at LHU to follow professional pursuits in other directions.
It would be valuable if you could please take a moment to share your thoughts with administrators in the State System on the value and importance of your degree in Recreation Management at LHU. Whether your perspective comes from the need for programs that develop professionals to deliver essential park and recreation related services (parks, tourism, community recreation, inclusive programs, etc) that address the needs of Pennsylvania residents, Pennsylvania communities, and to effectively manage the vast natural resources in Pennsylvania; or to speak to the value of the Recreation Management curriculum and experiences as you pursued your professional and personal endeavors.
It might be helpful to know that in our proposals for the Northeastern Integration Program Array, the Recreation Management faculty proposed a Recreation Management degree program focused on Tourism and Event Management, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resource Management, and Youth and Community Development with additional interdisciplinary certificate options in Event Management, Adventure Leadership, and Sustainable Tourism (would consist of 4-5 courses across multiple disciplines). Therapeutic Recreation and Fitness/Strength and Conditioning, if included in the integration, will be housed in Exercise Science.
We know that many of you are passionate about the Recreation Management Department and the experiences and relationships that guided you following graduation. Your voice is valuable and necessary. Please speak from your unique perspective whether it is about the personal value in the degree or the professional value in the degree. The public comment link is available through June 28th (60 days from April 28, 2021).

We are grateful for your support. We need to continue to be vigilant to ensure the continued existence of educational curriculums that effectively prepare professionals to ensure the delivery of quality services in the field and in life.

In the midst of isolation and social distancing, there are ways to find a little healing. Gardening can create a sense of therapeutic healing and positive emotion. Gardening and horticulture therapy can positively influence people's emotional state - active engagement, feelings of productivity and value, and the joy of playing in the dirt and watching beautiful things grow.

Gardening during a pandemic is for everyone, regardless of whether you live in an apartment or on a 100 acre ranch. Victory Gardens during WWII supplied homes with fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs, and Pandemic Gardens today can do the same. Gardening also gets you out in the fresh air (while res...
