Caldwell County Elections Serving Caldwell County Voters in the Great State of Texas!

You may have heard that a ballot marked with initials or other writing may disqualify your ballot, but that is a misconception. In fact, the presiding election judge for a polling place or the early voting clerk must sign or initial the ballots in Texas. Don't let misinformation confuse you.

Caldwell County Elections Department encourages voters to rely on official election information when questions arise about ballot markings and voting procedures.

Texas Election Code establishes specific requirements for official markings placed on ballots by election officials:

• Election Day — Sec. 62.008:** The presiding judge’s signature must be placed on the back of each ballot. A signature stamp may be used.

• Early Voting — Sec. 85.0311:** The early voting clerk’s initials must be placed on the back of each ballot. A facsimile stamp may be used.

Texas Election Code **Sec. 65.009** also addresses irregularly marked ballots and provides that a ballot is not automatically invalid simply because it was not marked in strict conformity with the Code. A vote may be counted when the voter’s intent is clearly ascertainable, unless another law prohibits counting the vote.

Do not rely on social media posts, forwarded messages, or rumors about ballot validity. Election procedures are governed by Texas law and official election guidance.

When you have a question about your ballot, please ask an election official at your polling location or contact the Caldwell County Elections Department.
