🎃📚 Unlock the Magic of Reading at Literacy Night! 🪄🦇

Get ready for a spooktacular evening of reading, magic and fun at Lockport High School on Thursday, October 29, from 6 to 8 p.m.! Doors open at 5:45 p.m.

Bring the family for a Halloween-themed Literacy Night filled with activities for readers of all ages!

Here’s what’s in store:
🪄 Kick off the night with a magical opening show!
📚 Meet local authors and celebrate the joy of storytelling.
🎃 Explore spooky, interactive literacy stations featuring hands-on activities focused on reading, phonics, vocabulary and more.
🍬 Fill your Pumpkin Passport by collecting stamps at stations and earning sweet treats along the way!
🏡 Discover ways to bring literacy home with take-home activities, literacy resources and a book exchange.

🧙‍♀️ Wear a school-appropriate Halloween costume and join us for a night of literacy magic!

Over the past few weeks, Rachel's Challenge representatives have been visiting our schools to talk about the program that centers around building resilience and create a culture of kindness. Students at Roy B. Kelley and other elementary schools learn about building kindness, connection, and confidence habits.

Join us tonight, Wednesday, October 14, for Rachel's Challenge Parent Night to learn how we can support kindness values at school and home. The program is from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at LHS Cafeteria, Room 104A. You can use door #3 to park and enter. Free refreshments will be provide! Hope to see you there.

DECA members from LHS were invited to attend the 43North semi-finals at the Golisano Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship, where 15 Semi-Finalists competed for the eight spots on the Finals stage.

Students also got to meet up with LHS Alum, Travis Schufelt, who is attending the Institute as part of their first cohort of students!

Our 6th graders explored "what we can do to help our environment" through Protector of the Land: John Muir. Students hunted for evidence in the text, worked together to arrange sentence strips, and shared their ideas before building their own color-coded responses using the RACE writing strategy.

RACE helps students Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite evidence from the text, and Explain their thinking - giving them a clear framework for building strong written responses.

Students at Anna Merritt Elementary combined ELA, creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on STEM learning with a fun Room on the Broom challenge! 🧹🎃✨

After reading Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, students practiced retelling the story, creating a summary, identifying the characters and recalling the key events.

Then students were given the challenge to design and build a “broom” that could sit one inch off the desk and “fly” just like the broom in the story using just a few items. To make the challenge even more exciting, their broom also had to be strong enough to hold all five of the story’s characters - the candy pumpkins!

Lockport High School recently hosted Lancaster HS for the First Amendment First Vote Fall Regional Seminar part of Running Start . Young high school women from both high schools were brought together for a day of leadership development, civic engagement and networking with local leaders.

As part of the year-long program, students will develop a community action project to present at the statewide conference next spring. Completing the project also helps students earn 4 points toward New York State’s Seal of Civic Readiness.

We’re proud to see our students finding their voices and learning how they can make a difference in their communities!

Anna Merritt Elementary hosted a PTA Fundraiser with a twist last month. Families and the community were invited to 's Ice Cream, where a percentage of sales went right to AM's PTA!

🍦 The twist (besides the custard kind)? Principal McMahon and Assistant Principal Smorol were guests serving up the ice cream with a few familiar teachers from Anna Merritt too!
