Attn: Lockport Residents

The fire department is required to test all fire hydrants yearly to ensure all hydrants are mechanically functioning properly and gather flow data for Property Insurance Association of Louisiana. This information helps the fire department determine which hydrants are best to access and what water needs will be needed when responding to a fire-related emergency in an area.

Residents are advised the hydrant testing will cause discoloration (yellow, brownish, or rusty) of the water for a short period of time when testing in your neighborhood or street. This discoloration is not harmful to health but avoid washing light or white colored clothing during the duration of discolored water to avoid stains. It’s also advised to run cold water faucets until water clears to avoid sediments going into water heaters. Please slow down and use caution while driving when hydrants are being flowed and tested.

BLIGHT CLEARANCE GRANT: Lafourche Parish Government is applying for state grant funding through the Community Development Block Grant program to supplement our current blight program.

The Parish program has demolished 85 structures for a total of $493,490 since 2025. If the grant is approved, we will be able to demolish more blighted structures across Lafourche Parish.

PROGRAM DETAILS:
• Residents across Lafourche Parish are encouraged to apply.
• Funds will be used to demo blighted residential structures.
• The grant money, IF APPROVED, will cover all costs for demolition and removal at no cost to the property owners.
• Property owners of these structures will maintain ownership of the property through this program.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: HWY 308 Closure and LA 1 Detour Guidelines

Thru traffic, heavy vehicles, and commercial traffic urged to avoid Rita Bridge to prevent forced closure

Chief of Police David Harrelson Jr. and the Lockport Police Department are issuing an official traffic advisory regarding the ongoing closure of Highway 308 and detailing required detour routes to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow.

Official Detour Instructions:
-Northbound LA 1 Traffic: All motorists traveling northbound on LA 1 must remain on Crescent Ave / LA 1 to continue north when approaching the intersection of Crescent Ave and Main St.

-Main Street Access: Main Street is strictly designated for local traffic only.

Critical Notice for Commercial and Heavy Vehicles

-The Lockport Police Department warns that GPS navigation software is currently misrouting commercial semi-trucks and heavy transport loads down Main Street to cross the Rita Bridge to reach Highway 308.
The Rita Bridge cannot sustain the weight of heavy commercial vehicles. Continued attempts by semi-trucks and heavy loads to cross this structure pose significant safety hazards and may force an immediate, full closure of the bridge.

-Ongoing Mitigation Efforts

The Lockport Police Department is actively coordinating with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LA DOTD) to place official detour signage and physical barricades at key locations.
Chief Harrelson requests that all drivers—especially commercial operators—pay close attention to posted road signs rather than relying solely on GPS navigation to avoid unnecessary traffic delays and protect city infrastructure.

There will be sand for sand bags available by the town barn. It will be self serve. There are bags for the sand at the location as well.

🏀 Giving Back to Our Community!🏀

Central Lafourche Youth Basketball is proud to support the Town of Lockport by donating a basketball goal for the construction of a new basketball court at the Lockport Bayouside Park.

We believe every child deserves a safe place to play, grow, and develop both on and off the court. This new court will provide countless opportunities for young athletes, families, and community members to come together through the game of basketball.

A special thank you to Barry Plaisance, Mayor of the Town of Lockport for his commitment to investing in the youth of our community. We are honored to play a small role in this exciting project and look forward to seeing the court filled with smiling faces, friendly competition, and future basketball stars.
