What happens to public funds between collection and distribution? They should be managed with clear guardrails: not unnecessary risk.

As Treasurer, I will follow a simple order when managing idle tax dollars:

Safety first: protect the public’s money.
Liquidity second: keep funds available when distributions are due.
Yield third: seek a responsible return only after safety and access are secured.

Public funds must be safeguarded and available on time for the taxing bodies that rely on those distributions. Earning a return matters, but it should never come before protecting principal or meeting obligations.

Every dollar has a name. Responsible stewardship means practical decisions, clear accountability, and respect for every taxpayer dollar.

The Treasurer does not set tax rates, determine assessments, or approve the county budget. The job is to manage money responsibly, safeguard public funds, and ensure accurate, timely distributions.

Leadership that listens, action that works. What questions do you have about how Will County taxpayer dollars should be managed? Share them below.

Experience is only half the job

Real estate and banking experience is valuable : but the Treasurer's first job is protecting taxpayer money and following the law.

The current officeholder was in charge when Will County homeowners lost their equity in tax sales. When the Supreme Court banned equity theft in 2023, there was silence.

Could an earlier look at your property-tax account help you avoid last-minute stress and avoidable costs? A clear calendar can help.

If you have an unpaid balance, or simply have a question, please review your account and contact the official Will County Treasurer’s Office promptly:

November 13, 2026 at 4:30 p.m.: Last day to pay unpaid taxes before the tax-sale process advances.

December 1, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.: The 2026 tax sale begins.

The Treasurer’s Office collects property taxes, issues receipts, distributes funds to taxing bodies, and provides taxpayer information. It does not set tax rates, determine property assessments, or approve the county budget. Clear information about who does what is part of responsible taxpayer service.

As an Accountant and Practical Problem Solver, Carmen J. Maurella III believes every dollar has a name: and residents deserve timely information they can use.

Will County, where should Carmen go next to hear from you?

As an Accountant and practical problem solver, Carmen is taking the Community Listening Tour to coffee shops, diners, community events, and town halls across Joliet, Lockport, Bolingbrook, Frankfort, Plainfield, New Lenox, and beyond.

We want to hear directly from taxpayers:
• What works well in the Treasurer’s office?
• What feels confusing?
• What would make the process clearer and easier to navigate?

The Treasurer’s responsibilities include collecting and safeguarding public dollars, ensuring payments are properly recorded, and serving taxpayers with transparency and accountability. The office does not set tax rates or property assessments: but it should help residents understand where the money goes.

Every dollar has a name.

Comment with your town and the question or concern you want Carmen to address. Leadership that listens leads to action that works.
