National Police Week is an annual observance recognizing the men and women in law enforcement who protect and serve our community every day. It is also a time to remember and honor the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, including one of our own, Officer Rick Cromwell, who died in the line of duty on December 9, 1998.

Wearing the Lodi PD badge and serving our community is a privilege we never take for granted.

This morning, our Traffic Unit conducted enforcement in the school zone along Ham Lane near Lodi Middle School. Two traffic officers monitored for vehicles exceeding the 25 MPH school zone speed limit, as well as drivers making illegal left turns onto Ham Lane from the school parking lot. In addition, one of our Community Service Officers held up extra signage to remind motorists of the reduced speed limit. Despite these efforts, six vehicles were stopped for speeding during the morning drop-off period.

Please remember that school zones begin 500 feet from the border of a school. The speed limit in a school zone is 25 MPH while children are present and at recess. If the school is not bordered by a fence or other physical barrier separating students from passing traffic, the 25 MPH school zone speed limit remains in effect throughout the entire school day. CVC 22352(b)(2).

Although the last day of school for LUSD is May 29th, these same rules will continue to apply for students attending summer school programs.

Our Traffic Unit plans to conduct additional school zone speed enforcement operations at additional LUSD schools throughout the coming weeks.

Please slow down, stay alert, and help us keep our school zones safe for students, staff, and families.

Congratulations again to the fifth grade class at Needham Elementary on completing the G.R.E.A.T. Program!

We are thankful for our continued partnership with LUSD and appreciate the support of Needham Elementary in making this program possible. A special thank you to 5th grade teacher Ms. Ruiz and Principal Cunningham for their efforts in supporting the program, and to Officer Deanda and Officer Bahr for their dedication to teaching and mentoring our students.

We’d also like to thank Retired LPD Officer Pendergast for coordinating the class, and Rancho San Miguel for providing cupcakes and drinks for the graduates to enjoy—your contributions made the celebration even more memorable!

In observance of the San Joaquin County Peace Officer Memorial, members of the Lodi Police Department gathered to remember the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the communities they proudly served.

Every year, we honor the memory of Officer Rick Cromwell by visiting his gravesite and remembering his legacy. We also pay tribute to two LPD Partners, Gene Taylor and Robert Hindmarsh, remembering their selfless dedication to and service to our community.

LPD is currently investigating a major accident at the intersection of Church Street and Elm Street. If possible, please avoid the area, as traffic delays are expected. LPD encourages witnesses to the collision to contact dispatch at (209)333-6728.

***Update 8:20 PM***
This collision was a vehicle vs. pedestrian. An adult female was transported to a local area hospital and is currently in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle remained on-scene and cooperated with the investigation. Drugs and/or alcohol were determined not to be a factor in this collision. This remains an open and active investigation. The roadway is now open.

Yesterday, Detective Sanchez, Officer Dunfee and Chief Garcia took part in the Children’s Day / Día del Niño event hosted by Community Partnerships for Families.

It was great to connect with members of the community and meet several future police officers along the way.

This past Saturday (April 25th), at approximately 3:45 PM, LPD Dispatch received reports of a large group of juveniles riding off-highway electric motorcycles (e-motos), electric bicycles, pocket bikes, and traditional bicycles in the area of Lower Sacramento Rd and Kettleman Ln. Officers responded and located the group, which quickly dispersed into smaller groups traveling in different directions.

During the incident, two juveniles were stopped in separate locations. An e-moto and a pocket bike were impounded, and both juveniles were cited for numerous vehicle code violations, including reckless driving.

Situations like this highlight why we continue to focus on both awareness and accountability when it comes to roadway safety. Riding in a dangerous or unlawful manner puts not only the rider at risk but also drivers, pedestrians, and others in the community.

Parents and guardians: Please take time to talk with your children about the importance of following traffic laws, riding responsibly, and understanding how quickly unsafe decisions can lead to serious consequences. These conversations play a critical role in keeping them, and others, safe.

LPD will continue working to address these concerns through proactive patrols, enforcement when necessary, and ongoing outreach to keep our roadways safe for everyone.
