Most people think about giving as writing a check.

But that’s usually not where the biggest impact comes from.

We talk with a lot of donors who want to do a little more for Lodi. What we’ve found is—it’s often not about giving more. It’s about giving in a different way.

Some donors give appreciated stock instead of cash, which may allow them to give more than they expected without changing their day-to-day finances.

Others give directly from an IRA once they reach age 70½, which can be a simple, tax-efficient way to support the community.

And some people make one of their most meaningful gifts through their will—setting something aside now that will support Lodi long into the future.

There’s no one “right” way to give.

But here’s the simple takeaway: You may already have everything you need to make a bigger difference—you just might not be using it yet.

If you’ve ever been curious what that could look like for you, we’re always happy to talk it through.

A lot of us give in a personal way. We support a cause we care about or a nonprofit doing work that matters to us. That kind of giving is important, and it always will be.

But some needs in Lodi are harder to meet with one specific gift. Giving together through a flexible community fund can help fill those gaps.
At Lodi House, Roya Main is helping women and children in our community.

Like many nonprofit leaders, she is also raising money, building support, and helping move the organization forward. For smaller nonprofits, outside support for fundraising, planning, and sustainability can make a real difference, but it is often difficult to fund.

Because donors gave together through a community fund with the flexibility to respond to Lodi’s needs, that support was possible.
Through this support, Lodi House received coaching to strengthen its fundraising and long term sustainability. That investment helped strengthen the organization and the women and children it serves

Her story is one example of what can happen when donors come together around a shared interest.

Some give through a fund like the BONES Capacity Building Fund, or the Community Impact Fund, which can respond to local needs as they change. Others may choose to start a fund focused on supporting a specific charity, or a field they care deeply about, like early childhood education, the arts, animals, community beautification, or basic needs.

When people give together in this way, the impact can be bigger, more flexible, and better aligned with what they care about most.

That is one of the ways we build a stronger Lodi.

What an inspiring day in Lodi!

Thank you to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco for hosting “Connecting Capital to Community Needs: Building Collective Impact in San Joaquin County” at the Lodi Boys & Girls Club (Lodi BG Club).

Lodi’s own Poet Laureate, Nancy Gonzalez St. Clair, opened the forum with a powerful poetry reading, setting the tone for a day of learning, connection, and possibility.

The room brought together banks, CDFIs, nonprofits, and community foundation colleagues from across the region to explore how capital can better support community needs. We learned about CRA funding, community development finance, small business technical assistance, workforce development, affordable housing, nonprofit sustainability, and services for low- and moderate-income communities.

Thank you to Exchange Bank, F&M Bank (Stuart Krengel), Oak Valley Community Bank, and many others for sharing strong examples of this work in action.

A special thank you to the planning team for bringing this important conversation to Lodi: Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco (Leilani Barnett), Central Valley Investment Collaborative, Oak Valley Community Bank (Jose Sabala, Phillip Murrell, Kevin Borges), ACCESS Plus Capital Community CDFI (Tate Hill, Nigel Kirk), Lodi Boys & Girls Club (Roger Coover), San Joaquin Community Foundation (Nik Howard and Michael Duffy), and Lodi Community Foundation (Louis Ponick).
Grateful for the conversations, examples, and shared commitment to building stronger communities across San Joaquin County.
