It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ryan Blau, who left us Tuesday evening after a difficult and courageous battle with cancer.

Ryan was the definition of dedicated public servant. He began his law enforcement career in 1998 before finding his home with the Logan City Police Department in 2001. After a remarkable career, he officially retired as a Sergeant in January 2025, but his commitment to this community was so deep that he returned to work for LCPD part-time shortly after.

Throughout his time in uniform, Ryan wore many hats. He served as a Motors Officer, a K9 Handler, a Fi****ms Instructor, and a member of the Honor Guard. He was also a fiercely dedicated SWAT Operator, eventually rising to lead as SWAT Commander.

Beyond his impressive resume, Ryan was, above all else, a friend and mentor to all who had the privilege of working alongside him. His guidance, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy within the department and our community will live on.

Rest easy, Ryan. We have the watch from here đź’™

Every year, the Logan City Police Department hosts an annual banquet during National Police Week to recognize the fantastic work our employees do and honor those before us who fell in the line of duty. This year, we are incredibly proud to present the following individuals with these awards:

Sergeant Andrew Soelberg — Chief’s Commendation: For his leadership and project management in acquiring and refurbishing a defensive Bearcat rescue vehicle for the department.

Detective Scotland Hammond — Chief’s Commendation: For his commitment to public safety during a vehicle pursuit in July 2025. He maintained exceptional composure and tactical control, even as he sustained an injury when his vehicle was intentionally rammed by the suspect.

Mr. Brad Lewis — Chief’s Commendation: For community partnership and public service. Through his local UPS store, he stopped thousands and thousands of dollars intended for criminal enterprises from reaching scammers targeting senior citizens.

Corporal Zen Weight, Corporal Robert Palmer, Corporal Kyle VanAmen, and Officer Micah Vehrs — Medal of Valor: For extraordinary bravery and selfless service in the line of duty while under sustained gunfire from a barricaded suspect in Hyrum in June 2025.

Corporal Zen Weight — Patrol Officer of the Year & 2025 Top DUI Award: For being a true keeper of the peace, possessing an innate ability to de-escalate situations with individuals who are often experiencing the most difficult days of their lives. Cpl. Weight also received the Top DUI Award for making 30 of the 171 DUI arrests our department made in 2025.

Detective Landon Crotts — Detective of the Year: For his contributions to the Investigations Division, particularly regarding the financial exploitation of elderly citizens. He goes above and beyond in educating victims’ families and caretakers on fraud prevention. (Not pictured)

Dispatcher Sandra Frances — Dispatcher of the Year: For her outstanding contributions and the profound impact she has made in Logan 911 Communications, exemplifying what it means to serve with dedication, resilience, and excellence.

Officer Matt Pearce — Edwin “Ted” Edwards Peer Award: Named after our second line-of-duty death within the Logan City Police Department, this award recognizes individuals who exhibit compassion, camaraderie, and support for their fellow officers.

Sergeant Brandon Bevan — Willard R. Dahle Employee of the Year Award: Named after our first line-of-duty death within the Logan City Police Department, this award recognizes Sgt. Bevan's spirit of service and dedication. While currently supervising the Major Crimes Unit and ensuring the highest standards of professionalism in dealing with serious offenses, his commitment extends far beyond his primary duties; he also provides tactical expertise as a SWAT Team Lead and ensures our department is represented with the utmost dignity as the Honor Guard Commander.

Please join us in congratulating these outstanding individuals for their dedication to keeping our community safe!

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day, making the week in which it falls National Police Week. This week is dedicated to honoring law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, supporting the families, friends, and colleagues they left behind, and celebrating the men and women who continue to protect and serve our communities with integrity every day.

This morning, the Logan City Police Department and Cache County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guards conducted a flag ceremony and twenty-one-gun salute to kick off National Police Week. Thank you to everyone who joined us in taking a moment to remember those who gave everything for our safety.
