Safe travels!

At peak last night, over a quarter billion birds were in the air traveling southward for their fall migration. The next few nights could exceed these numbers with favorable atmospheric conditions expected. A sure sign of the changing seasons ahead!

Partner Casey Venable with Resilient Indiana: Technical Assistance for SWCDs has been hard at work studying up on benthic macroinvertebrates to help educate people on how and why to use aquatic insects to gauge river health. Casey will help out the Arrow Head RC&D Education team and partners in September as part of the annual rafting expedition on the Tippecanoe River at the Tippecanoe State Park. We have around 100 Cass County students participating on the second week! We'll share Casey's study sheets with other people who are hosting the program and she has graciously given us permission to share them here as well. We sure do appreciate you, Casey!

Can't say enough good things about NICHES Land Trust and the opportunities they offer to enhance stewardship awareness and skills.......

Do you like helping our regional ecosystems thrive and wearing native plant themed art created by a local artist? Then join us for our new 'Project Native Harvest' volunteer seed collection series!🌾🌿

As NICHES staff and volunteers restore habitats and remove invasive plant species from our preserves, we can help reduce reinvasion and rebuild biodiversity by collecting locally sourced native seeds for habitat restoration. For this year’s effort, we will be hosting seed collection workdays every Friday (1-4pm) between July 31st and October 23rd at local nature preserves within a 10–50-minute drive of Lafayette. Register for 2 shifts before September 15th to receive this years t-shirt free of charge!

A very heartfelt congratulations to Cass County residents, Cameron and Cara Mills (and their family) with Mills Family Farms and Regen Mills for being the 2026 Cass County recipients for the River Friendly Farmer award. We joined them and other honored Hoosiers, all of whom are excellent stewards of soil health and water quality, yesterday at the State Fair for the awards ceremony. It was a true pleasure to see the Mills family represent our county; their commitment to responsible, sensible conservation practices and dedication to "leaving the world a better place than how you found it" cement them as roll models that we can all learn from.

It's looking like we'll be inside the McHale Pavilion this morning, which, given the amount of rain that just keeps raining this week, surprises no one.
