What is “Car Hopping”?

“Car hopping” is a crime that involves a person or groups of people walking around a neighborhood or some other place with a lot of cars late at night, most commonly between 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., and randomly checking cars to see if they are unlocked. If a car is found to be unlocked “car hoppers” will then search the vehicle to steal items of value such as handguns, air pods, purses, wallets, smartphones, cash, or other valuables.

The City of Logansport has had a recent increase of vehicle thefts over the past two weeks due to individuals entering unlocked vehicles while “car hopping”. Protect yourself from this type of criminal activity by removing valuables from your vehicle and locking your vehicle doors AT ALL TIMES!
If you determine that you are a victim of theft, please contact the Logansport Police Department to file a report. If you have video footage of subjects entering unlocked vehicles, we would also like to view them.

Videos can be email to the Logansport Police Department at [email protected]
