York Township Through Time: A Day in the Life During the 1893 World’s Fair

Imagine living in York Township in 1893. Much of the township was still farmland, with dirt roads stretching between small communities like Lombard and Elmhurst. Horses and wagons filled the roads, children attended one-room schoolhouses, and daily life revolved around farming, family, and the seasons.

But only miles away, Chicago was hosting one of the most spectacular events in the world: the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition — better known as the Chicago World’s Fair.

For many York Township residents, the railroad lines running through Lombard and Elmhurst offered a direct connection to the fairgrounds in Chicago. Local families who made the trip would have seen incredible sights unlike anything they had experienced before — electric lights illuminating entire buildings, massive exhibition halls, new inventions, and people visiting from around the world.

The contrast must have been remarkable. One day could be spent tending livestock or working fields, and the next standing beneath the glowing “White City” of the fair.

Even for residents who never attended, the fair’s influence quickly reached York Township. Rail travel expanded, businesses grew, and communities along the railroad began evolving from quiet farming settlements into growing suburban towns. Lombard — still often called Babcock’s Grove by longtime residents — and Elmhurst were beginning to change with the times.

While York Township in 1893 still moved at the pace of horses, harvests, and handwritten letters, the World’s Fair offered a glimpse into the future — and that future was already beginning to arrive here at home.
